Celtic Symphony (Wolfe Tones Song)
''Celtic Symphony'' is a song by The Wolfe Tones, written to celebrate the centenary of Celtic Football Club. It has become a staple song for Irish nationalism and Irish sports teams which has led to controversy due to its lyrics. Composition The song was composed to celebrate the centenary of Celtic Football Club. "Ooh, ahh, up the RA" The songs chorus features a reference to some graffiti with the words "Ooh, ahh, up the RA" - a reference to the Irish Republican Army. Warfield said that those who are offended by the song are misguided about its intentions, and that it is a direct quote from graffiti he'd seen in Glasgow. Glasgow Celtic no longer associate with the band. Popularity and use The song is popular among Celtic supporters. Boxer Michael Conlan used the song as his entrance music, and Sinn Féin politician Pauline Tully has used the song during campaigning. The Wolfe Tones
The Wolfe Tones are an Irish rebel music band that incorporate Irish traditional music in their songs. Formed in 1963, they take their name from Theobald Wolfe Tone, one of the leaders of the Irish Rebellion of 1798, with the double meaning of a wolf tone – a spurious sound that can affect instruments of the violin family. History 1963–1964: Formation The origins of the group date back to August 1963, where three neighbouring children from the Dublin suburb of Inchicore, Brian Warfield, Noel Nagle, and Liam Courtney, had been musical friends from childhood. Pauline Tully (formerly Pauline Tully-McAuley) is an Irish Sinn Féin politician who has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Cavan–Monaghan constituency since the 2020 general election. She was a member of Cavan County Council for the Ballyjamesduff local electoral area from the 1999 election until 2012. Early and personal life Tully grew up on a farm in Kilnaleck, County Cavan, where she still lives. She teaches history at Breifne College. Michael Conlan (boxer)
Michael John Conlan (born 19 November 1991) is an Irish professional boxer who challenged for the WBA (Regular) featherweight title in March 2022. As an amateur, he reached number one in the AIBA bantamweight world rankings, with achievements that include a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics and gold at the 2015 World Championships. He has been one of Ireland's most successful amateur fighters of all time. He turned professional in 2016 after misgivings with the amateur sport, and had his first bout in 2017.
