''Celluloide'' is a 1996 Italian historical drama film directed by Carlo Lizzani from a screenplay by Furio Scarpelli, Ugo Pirro and Lizzani, based on the 1983 novel of the same name by Pirro. Ugo Pirro
Ugo Pirro (April 20, 1920 – January 18, 2008) was an Italian screenwriter and novelist. Biography Born Ugo Mattone in Battipaglia, near Salerno, he debuted as screenwriter for director Carlo Lizzani (''Achtung! Banditi!'', 1951, and '' Il gobbo'', 1960). His screenplays of the 1970s include films ''Indagine su un cittadino al di sopra di ogni sospetto'' and '' Il giardino dei Finzi-Contini'', which both won Academy Awards as Best Foreign Film. Pirro was also a literature author, his most notable works being ''Le soldatesse'' (1956), set in the Italian occupation of Greece during World War II, and '' Celluloide'', adapted for cinema by Lizzani in 1996. Carlo Lizzani (3 April 1922 – 5 October 2013) was an Italian film director, screenwriter and critic. Biography Born in Rome, before World War II Lizzani worked as a scenarist on such films as Roberto Rossellini's ''Germany Year Zero'', Alberto Lattuada's '' The Mill on the Po'' (both 1948) and Giuseppe De Santis' ''Bitter Rice'' (1949), for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Story. After directing documentaries, he debuted as a feature director with the admired World War II drama ''Achtung! Banditi!'' (1951). Giancarlo Giannini (born 1 August 1942) is an Italian actor and voice actor. He won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actor for his performance in ''Love and Anarchy'' (1973) and received an Academy Award nomination for ''Seven Beauties'' (1975). He is also a four-time recipient of the David di Donatello Award for Best Actor. Furio Scarpelli (16 December 1919 – 28 April 2010), also called ''Scarpelli'', was an Italian screenwriter, famous for his collaboration on numerous Commedia all'italiana films with Agenore Incrocci, forming the duo Age & Scarpelli.Obituary ''New York Times'', 1 May 2010; page D8. He was the son of journalist Filiberto Scarpelli. During his childhood he devoted himself to writing and drawing. Pasqualina "Lina" Sastri is an Italian actress and singer. Life and career Born in Naples, Lina Sastri started acting in amateur dramatics at very young age. She made her professional debut with the theatrical company Teatro Libero, and had her breakout in 1974, starring in the musical drama ''Masaniello''. ''Rome, Open City'' ( it, Roma città aperta, also released as ''Open City'') is a 1945 Italian neorealist war drama film directed by Roberto Rossellini and co-written by Sergio Amidei, Celeste Negarville and Federico Fellini. Set in Rome in 1944, the film follows a diverse group of characters coping under the Nazi occupation, and centers on a Resistance fighter trying to escape the city with the help of a Catholic priest. The title refers to Rome being declared an open city after 14 August 1943. It forms the first third of Rosselini's "Neorealist Trilogy", followed by ''Paisan'' (1946) and ''Germany, Year Zero'' (1948). Manuel De Sica (24 February 1949 – 5 December 2014) was an Italian composer. Born in Rome, the son of Vittorio De Sica and María Mercader, De Sica enrolled at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, in which he studied with Bruno Maderna. He debuted as a composer for his father's film ''A Place for Lovers'' (1968). In 1993, De Sica won the Nastro d'Argento for Best Score for Carlo Verdone's '' Al lupo, al lupo''. In 1996 he won the David di Donatello for Best Score for Carlo Lizzani's '' Celluloide''. In 2005 he was honored with the title of Commendatore of the Italian Republic.
