Cecil Ashburn Drive
Cecil Ashburn Drive is a major road in South Huntsville that carries nearly 20,000 vehicles across Huntsville Mountain in and out of the city from neighboring subdivisions. The scenic mountain route is a four-lane road with eight-foot shoulders on both sides to allow joggers and bicyclists to safely travel the road. Initially a two-lane road, the city of Huntsville widened 3.4 miles of Cecil Ashburn Drive, beginning at Donegal Drive to Taylor Road. The widening project began in January 2019 and was completed in August 2020. The project converted Cecil Ashburn Drive into a four-lane divided highway. Cecil Ashburn connects Hampton Cove and Jones Valley and provides an alternative way for people to get through, into, and out of Huntsville. Huntsville is a city in Madison County, Limestone County, and Morgan County, Alabama, United States. It is the county seat of Madison County. Located in the Appalachian region of northern Alabama, Huntsville is the most populous city in the state. Jones Valley is an urbanized valley and region of Huntsville, Alabama. The community is bordered by Monte Sano Mountain and Green Mountain to the east and Waltons Mountain to the west. Jones Valley houses a variety of homes, ranging from mid-century houses to mountaintop estates. A park called Jones Farm Park sits adjacent to Carl T. Jones Drive. It contains miles of walking trails and two ponds. The Ledges, a private golf club and gated community, is also located in Jones Valley. History The area was founded by Carl T. Blevins Gap Nature Preserve
Blevins Gap Nature Preserve is a nature preserve in southern Huntsville, Alabama. It measures in total and contains over 12 miles of trails within its borders. Cecil Ashburn Drive splits the preserve into two parts. The northern section measures with 4.5 miles of trails, a rocky incline, and waterfalls. The southern portion measures the remaining and contains 8 miles of woodland trails. The trail system was designated as a National Recreation Trail in 2012. History The preserve contains the southernmost remnant of the "Spacewalk Trail", which was constructed by Boy Scouts in the 1960s and ran from Monte Sano State Park to the southern edge of Green Mountain. The northern portion of the preserve, donated in 1988, was the first piece of land ever donated to a land trust in Alabama. Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail
The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail is a collection of championship caliber golf courses, designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., distributed across the state of Alabama, as part of investments by the Retirement Systems of Alabama. The Trail started with 378 holes at eight sites throughout the state, but has grown to 468 holes at eleven sites. The concept was created and executed by David G. Bronner, CEO of the Retirement Systems of Alabama.
