Cec Purves
Cecil John Harry "Cec" Purves (born October 18, 1933) is a politician in Alberta, Canada, who served as mayor of Edmonton. Early life Purves was born in Edmonton on October 18, 1933. He grew up in the city's Calder, Pigeon Lake, Norwood, Riverdale, and Lavigne (now known as Skunk Hollow) areas and went to Victoria High School and Strathcona High School. Purves graduated in 1950. On December 29, 1956 he married Clare Heller, with whom he have four daughters, Cindy, Corinne, Caroline and Catherine. He worked for the Dominion Bank from 1950 until 1959, and worked for his family's upholstering firm, Apex Auto Upholstering, from 1959 until 1988. Purves is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Purves was a convert to the Church. Purves has served as a bishop in the Church and was the first Edmonton-born man to serve as a bishop in the Church in Edmonton. This is a list of mayors of Edmonton, a city in Alberta, Canada. Edmonton was incorporated as a town on January 9, 1892, with Matthew McCauley acclaimed as its first mayor during the town's first election, held February 10, 1892. On October 8, 1904, Edmonton became a city during the tenure of Mayor William Short. Edmonton was part of the North-West Territories until September 1, 1905, when it became the capital of the newly created province of Alberta, during the tenure of Mayor Kenneth W. MacKenzie. 1968 Edmonton Municipal Election
The 1968 Edmonton municipal election was held on October 16, 1968, to elect a mayor and twelve aldermen to sit on Edmonton City Council and seven trustees to sit on each of the public and separate school boards. The electorate also decided three plebiscite questions. On May 2, 1968, the Legislative Assembly of Alberta passed the Municipal Elections Act. this Act had three major effects: first, it standardized municipal terms as being three years in all Alberta municipalities. Second, it standardized the date on which municipal elections in Alberta would be held – the nomination deadline would be the third Monday of September and the election would be four weeks later. 1980 Edmonton Municipal Election
The 1980 municipal election was held October 15, 1980 to elect a mayor and twelve aldermen to sit on Edmonton City Council, nine trustees to sit on the public school board, and seven trustees to sit on the separate school board. This was the first election in which there were two aldermen elected from each of the six wards, instead of three aldermen elected from each of the four wards, as had previously been the case. 1977 Edmonton Municipal Election
The 1977 municipal election was held October 19, 1977 to elect a mayor and twelve aldermen to sit on Edmonton City Council, nine trustees to sit on the public school board, and seven trustees to sit on the separate school board. This was the first election in which a nine-member public school board was elected instead of the seven member board that had previously existed. William Hawrelak
William Hawrelak (October 4, 1915 – November 7, 1975) was a politician in Alberta, Canada, the longest-serving mayor in Edmonton's history, and a candidate for election to the House of Commons of Canada. Early life Hawrelak was born in Wasel, Alberta to Ukrainian immigrants Wasel/William and Anastasia Hawrelak (the family's ancestral name was Гавриляк (''Havryliak'')). (Wasel was named after William's father.) He married Pearl Shandro (daughter of Alberta MLA Andrew Shandro, after whom Hawrelak's home district was named) the pair had three daughters. In 1945, Hawrelak moved to Edmonton and purchased the Prairie Rose Manufacturing Co., which made soft drinks. He served as president of the Alberta Farmer's Union and of the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues before entering politics. Ivor Dent
Ivor Graham Dent, (February 7, 1924 – March 29, 2009) was a politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as mayor of Edmonton (1968-1974) and was a candidate for the House of Commons of Canada and the Legislative Assembly of Alberta on behalf of the CCF and the NDP parties. Early life Ivor Dent was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan on February 7, 1924. During World War II, he attempted to enlist in the Royal Canadian Air Force, but was rejected. He subsequently took work as an office boy for Canadian Pacific until he was accepted to the air force a year later; he served as a bombardier for three years. After the war, he married his wife, Aileen, in 1948 while he was studying science at the University of Saskatchewan; the couple had four children. 1971 Edmonton Municipal Election
The 1971 municipal election was held October 13, 1971 to elect a mayor and twelve aldermen to sit on Edmonton City Council and seven trustees to sit on each of the public and separate school boards. This was the first election in which a ward system was used. Where previously all twelve aldermen were elected at large, beginning with this election three would be elected from each of four wards (starting with the 1980 election, this was changed to two aldermen being elected from each of six wards). The election was conducted under the block voting system in which each voter was given as many votes as there were vacancies. Julian Koziak
Julian Gregory Joseph Koziak (born 16 September 1940) is a former politician from Alberta, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1971 to 1986. He was the son of John Harry and Marie (née Woytkiw) Koziak. Political career Koziak first ran in the 1971 Alberta general election in the district of Edmonton-Strathcona. He defeated incumbent Social Credit MLA and Minister of Health Joseph Donovan Ross with nearly 50% of the popular vote. In the 1975 general election he faced New Democrat Gordon Wright for the first time. He easily won the six-way race. After the election, Koziak was appointed Minister of Education by Peter Lougheed. In the 1979 general election, Koziak won a rematch against Wright by a 5% margin and with 45% of the popular vote. Dr. Joseph Donovan Ross (March 13, 1911 – May 22, 1984) was a medical doctor and politician from Alberta, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1952 to 1971. He also served as Minister of Health in the Alberta provincial government. He was known by the name Dr. J. Donovan Ross. Strathcona Centre
Strathcona Centre was a provincial electoral district in Alberta, Canada, mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta using the first past the post method of voting from 1959 to 1971. History It was created in 1959 after the Edmonton district was broken up into ridings. The historic 1959 redistribution of the provincial ridings of Calgary and Edmonton standardized the voting system back to First Past the Post.
