Cayuga, Texas
Cayuga is an unincorporated community in northwestern Anderson County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 200 in 2000. It is located within the Palestine, Texas micropolitan area. History Cayuga was so named in 1894 by the first postmaster, William Alonzo Davenport, after his native Cayuga, New York. The community began to grow in the 1880s, gathering people and resources from the earlier communities: Gilmore's Community, Wild Cat Bluff and Bethel, all settled in the 1840s. In 1854, the Judson Baptist Church began at an arbor near Charles Gilmore's home. There they built the first Judson church building and cemetery (now called Old Judson Cemetery or just "lost cemetery"). Judson Church moved to its second location near Cayuga in the 1880s (location of Judson Cemetery), and its current location in Cayuga on land donated by H. S. Clay in 1911. Shelby Metcalf
Shelby Metcalf (December 23, 1930 – February 8, 2007) was the head coach of the Texas A&M Aggies men's basketball team for 27 seasons, from 1963 to 1990. He won more games than any other coach in the former Southwest Conference. Achieving success as basketball coach at a university known more for its dedication to its football team, Metcalf endeared himself to Aggie fans for his loyalty to the school and his witticisms. Although his coaching career ended on a bitter note when he was fired in a dispute with A&M athletic director John David Crow in 1990, Metcalf remained loyal to Texas A&M University. Blackfoot, Texas
Blackfoot is an unincorporated community in Anderson County, located in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the Handbook of Texas, 33 people lived in the community in 2000. It is a part of the Palestine, Texas micropolitan area. History A Primitive Baptist church was located in Blackfoot and was preached by a family member of a resident named Cynthia Ann Parker. The community's first settlers came from South Carolina and Mississippi and included Isaac Brown, Abe Hoff, and D.M. Crisp. The community was supposedly named when Uncle Hamp Hanks, Sr., was told that he was in the "Blackfoot nation" when he arrived there in 1870. Friendship Baptist Church was the oldest church in the community, established in 1860. It stood on the line between Ward and Blackfoot. Corsicana is a city in Navarro County, Texas, United States. It is located on Interstate 45, 56 miles northeast of Waco, Texas. The population was 23,770 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Navarro County, and an important Agri-business center. Lignite
Lignite, often referred to as brown coal, is a soft, brown, combustible, sedimentary rock formed from naturally compressed peat. It has a carbon content around 25–35%, and is considered the lowest rank of coal due to its relatively low heat content. When removed from the ground, it contains a very high amount of moisture which partially explains its low carbon content. Lignite is mined all around the world and is used almost exclusively as a fuel for steam-electric power generation. The combustion of lignite produces less heat for the amount of carbon dioxide and sulfur released than other ranks of coal. As a result, environmental advocates have characterized lignite as the most harmful coal to human health. Navarro County ( ) is a county in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, the population was 52,624. Its county seat is Corsicana.
