St. Mary's Malankara Syrian Catholic Cathedral, Pattom, Trivandrum is the central place of worship of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church. It is the seat of the Major Archbishop of Trivandrum. The tombs of the Servant of God Archbishop Geevarghese Mar Ivanios, Archbishop Benedict Mar Gregorios and of Major Archbishop Cyril Baselios Catholicos are located here. The foundation stone of this cathedral was laid by Archbishop Mar Ivanios in 1950, and the cathedral was consecrated by Archbishop Benedict Mar Gregorios on 22 February 1965. Moran Mor Cyril Baselios Catholicos or, when referencing his title of Major Archbishop, Cyril Baselios Malancharuvil OIC (born ''James Malancharuvil'', 1935 – 2007) was the first major archbishop of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church. He was elevated by Pope John Paul II in 1995. Early life He was born in Pandalam, Kerala on 16 August 1935. His birth name was James Malancharuvil. In 1951 he entered in the Order of the Imitation of Christ (O.I.C.) and took the religious name of Cyril. He studied in Rome and was ordained priest on 4 October 1960. Education He received a doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome in 1965, after taking a master's degree in psychology from St. John's University in New York City. Benedict Mar Gregorios
Benedict Mor Gregorios (1 February 1916 – 10 October 1994) was the second metropolitan archbishop of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church. Life Gregorios or "Thangalathil Thirumeni" was born and raised in the Malankara Orthodox Church in Kalloopara, present day Pathanamthitta district. He was baptised by the name Varghese. As a teenage boy Varghese came closer to the ideal of Bethany Ashram. He was attracted by the personality of Geevarghese Ivanios and later became a member of Bethany Ashram and adopted the name Benedict. He studied philosophy and theology at Papal Seminary, Kandy, Sri Lanka. He was ordained a religious priest of Bethany Ashram by then Bishop of Kandy Bernad Reinjo in 1944. Geevarghese Ivanios (born 21 September 1882 as Geevarghese Panickeruveetil - died 15 July 1953) was the first metropolitan archbishop of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church and Major Archdiocese of Trivandrum. He was the founder of Bethany Ashram order of monks and Bethany madom order of nuns. He was the first M.A. degree holder in the Malankara Church.
