Cat Brooks
Cat Brooks is an American activist, playwright, poet and theater artist. She was a mayoral candidate in Oakland's 2018 election. Early life and education Brooks received her bachelor's degree from University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where she studied theater. Career After graduating, she began her acting studying at the National Royal Theater Studio in London, before moving to Los Angeles and working at Creative Artists Agency. In 2002, Brooks joined the nonprofit organization Community Coalition, where she focused on issues of education and racial justice. After the shooting of Oscar Grant by a BART police officer, Brooks became active in organizing against police violence. She co-founded the Anti Police-Terror Project and served as the executive director for the Bay Area National Lawyers Guild. She also became an organizer for the Black Lives Matter movement. Taser Safety Issues
Taser safety issues relate to the lethality of the Taser. The TASER device is a ''less-lethal'', not non-lethal, weapon, since the possibility of serious injury or death exists whenever the weapon is deployed. It is a brand of conducted electroshock weapon sold by Axon, formerly TASER International. Axon has identified increased risk in repeated, extended, or continuous exposure to the weapon; the Police Executive Research Forum says that total exposure should not exceed 15 seconds. A 2012 study published in the American Heart Association's journal '' Circulation'' found that Tasers can cause "ventricular arrhythmias, sudden cardiac arrest and even death." At least 49 people died in 2018 in the US after being shocked by police with a Taser. Natasha McKenna
Natasha McKenna (January9,1978February8,2015) was a 37-year-old African-American woman who died in Fairfax County, Virginia while in police custody. The catalyst event, extraction from her cell and being tasered while shackled, was captured on the video of the Fairfax County jail. During a team's efforts to extract the mentally ill prisoner, who resisted, they tasered her four times while she was restrained. No charges were filed against the deputies who tasered McKenna, but the case became the subject of a federal civil rights investigation because of several related issues.
