''Casuarina obesa'', commonly known as swamp she-oak or swamp oak, is a species of ''Casuarina'' that is closely related to '' C. glauca'' and '' C. cristata''. The Noongar peoples know the plant as Goolee, Kweela, Kwerl and Quilinock. Distribution It is native to a broad area of south-western Australia, with a much more restricted occurrence in New South Wales and Victoria.Threatened Species in NSW Description It is a small dioecious tree, growing to in height and capable of flowering at any time of year. It has male and female flowers on separate plants, the female plants produce woody cones in an indehiscent state, with crops from two seasons sometimes present. These produce approximately 370 seeds per gram. It is found in sand or clay soils, often in brackish or saline environments, along rivers, creeks and salt lakes. Friedrich Anton Wilhelm Miquel
Friedrich Anton Wilhelm Miquel (24 October 1811 – 23 January 1871) was a Dutch botanist, whose main focus of study was on the flora of the Dutch East Indies. Early life Miquel was born in Neuenhaus and studied medicine at the University of Groningen, where, in 1833, he received his doctorate. After starting work as a doctor at the Buitengasthuis Hospital in Amsterdam, in 1835, he taught medicine at the clinical school in Rotterdam. In 1838 he became correspondent of the Royal Institute, which later became the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, and in 1846 he became member. He was professor of botany at the University of Amsterdam (1846–1859) and Utrecht University (1859–1871). He directed the Rijksherbarium (National Herbarium) at Leiden from 1862. ''Casuarina glauca'', commonly known as the swamp she-oak, swamp oak, grey oak, or river oak, is a species of ''Casuarina'' native to the east coast of Australia. It is found from central Queensland south to southern New South Wales. It has become naturalised in the Everglades in Florida where it is considered a weed.
