Gaelic Football
Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. A goal is awarded for kicking the ball under the crossbar into the net (the ball cannot be hand-passed into the goal), signalled by the umpire raising a green flag. 1998 Cork Intermediate Hurling Championship
The 1998 Cork Intermediate Hurling Championship was the 89th staging of the Cork Intermediate Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Cork County Board in 1909. The draw for the opening fixtures took place on 14 December 1997. The championship began on 20 June 1998 and ended on 8 November 1998. On 8 November 1998, Castlelyons won the championship after a 2-12 to 2-09 defeat of Killeagh in the final at Páirc Uí Chaoimh. It was their first championship title in the grade. Killeagh's Joe Deane was the championship's top scorer with 3-24. Colm Spillane
Colm Spillane (born 1 July 1993) is an Irish hurler who plays for Cork Championship club Castlelyons. He played for the Cork senior hurling team at various stages between 2013 and 2021, during which time he usually lined out as a corner-back. Spillane began his hurling career at club level with Castlelyons. He broke onto the club's top adult team as a 16-year-old in 2010, before later lining out for University College Cork and Imokilly, winning consecutive County Championship titles with the latter. At inter-county level, Spillane enjoyed five consecutive but unsuccessful seasons with the Cork minor and under-21 teams, before later winning an All-Ireland Intermediate Championship title. He joined the Cork senior team in 2013. Spillane's senior career was blighted by a series of injuries, however, he made a combined total of 31 National League and Championship appearances in a career that ended with his last game in 2021. Niall O'Leary
Niall O'Leary (born 1998) is an Irish hurler who plays for club side Castlelyons, divisional side Imokilly and at inter-county level with the Cork senior hurling team. He is usually deployed as a corner-back, but can also be deployed as a full-back or as a centre-back. Playing career St. Colman's College O'Leary first came to prominence as a hurler with St. Colman's College in Fermoy. On 18 February 2017, he scored 1-01 from play for St. Colman's in a 2-22 to 1-06 defeat by Our Lady's Secondary School from Templemore in the Harty Cup final. University College Cork On 23 February 2019, O'Leary lined out at right corner-back for University College Cork when they faced Mary Immaculate College in the Fitzgibbon Cup final. Eoin Fitzgerald
Eoin Fitzgerald (born 7 January 1980) is an Irish former hurler. He played with a number of clubs, including Castlelyons, Castlegar and Oranmore-Maree, divisional side Imokilly and was also a member of the Cork senior hurling team. He usually lined out as a forward. Career Fitzgerald played schoolboy hurling with St Colman's College in Fermoy on a team that won consecutive Harty Cup titles and an All-Ireland Colleges Championship title in 1997. He later lined out with the University of Limerick and won a Fitzgibbon Cup title in 2002. At club level, Fitzgerald first lined out with Castlelyons in the juvenile and underage grades and was just 17-years-old when he won a Cork JAHC title with the team in 1997. Timmy McCarthy
Timmy McCarthy (born 7 September 1977) is an Irish retired hurler who played for East Cork club Castlelyons. He played for the Cork senior hurling team for 12 seasons, during which time he usually lined out as a right wing-forward. McCarthy began his hurling career at club level with Castlelyons. He broke onto the club's top adult team as a 16-year-old in 1994 and enjoyed his first success three years later when the club won the 1997 Cork Junior Championship title and promotion. Further promotion followed when he won a Cork Intermediate Championship title in 1998. McCarthy has made 58 championship appearances in four different grades of hurling for the club, while his early prowess also saw him selected for the Imokilly divisional team with whom he won back-to-back Cork Senior Championship titles 1997 and 1998. Cork Under-21 Hurling Championship
Cork Premier Under-21 A Hurling Championship (currently known for sponsorship reasons as the ''Evening Echo'' Cork County Premier Under-21 A Hurling Championship) is an annual hurling competition organised by the Cork County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association since 1973 for the top tier under-21 hurling teams in the county of Cork in Ireland. The series of games are played from the summer to the winter months with the county final currently being played at Páirc Uí Rinn. The prize for the winning team is the Dick Barrett Cup. The East Cork Junior A Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Michael O'Connor Motor Factors East Cork Junior Hurling Championship) is an annual hurling competition organised by the Imokilly Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association since 1926 for junior hurling teams in East Cork. The series of games begin in June, with the championship culminating with the final in September. The championship includes a knock-out stage and a "back door" for teams defeated in the first round. The Munster Junior Club Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the AIB Munster GAA Hurling Junior Club Championship) is an annual hurling competition organised by the Munster Council of the Gaelic Athletic Association and contested by the five champion junior clubs and one champion intermediate club in the province of Munster in Ireland. The 1997 Cork Junior Hurling Championship was the 100th staging of the Cork Junior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Cork County Board in 1895. The championship began on 27 September 1997 and ended on 30 November 1997. On 30 November 1997, Castlelyons won the championship after a 2-09 to 1-11 defeat of Courcey Rovers in the final at Páirc Uí Rinn. It remains their only championship title in the grade.
