Castleland
Castleland is an electoral ward in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales. It elects two county councillors to the Vale of Glamorgan Council. Description The Castleland ward covered an area of Barry southeast of the town centre including a large part of Barry Docks. Two county councillors were elected from the ward to the Vale of Glamorgan Council and two town councillors to Barry Town Council. According to the 2011 census the population of the ward was 4,852. In 2009 the ward was designated as a renewal zone, earmarked for improvements to housing and public spaces. Election results At the 1995 and 1999 county elections Castleland elected two Labour Party councillors. 2017 Vale Of Glamorgan Council Election
The 2017 Vale of Glamorgan Council election took place on Thursday 4 May 2017 to elect members of Vale of Glamorgan Council in Wales. There were 47 council seats available, across 23 wards. This was the same day as other United Kingdom local elections. The previous full council election took place on 3 May 2012, with the next full council election due to take place on 5 May 2022. Election result In winning 23 seats the Conservatives had a surprising resurgence, taking back the council from the previous coalition of Labour councillors and Llantwit First Independents. The Conservatives were one seat short of an overall majority. Labour-held wards such as Barry's Dyfan and Illtyd were taken by the Tories, as was the previous Plaid Cymru stronghold of Dinas Powys. Barry Docks
Barry Docks ( cy, Dociau'r Barri) is a port facility in the town of Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, a few miles southwest of Cardiff on the north shore of the Bristol Channel. They were opened in 1889 by David Davies and John Cory as an alternative to the congested and expensive Cardiff Docks to ship coal carried by rail from the South Wales Coalfield. The principal engineer was John Wolfe Barry, assisted by Thomas Forster Brown and Henry Marc Brunel, son of the famous engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The docks occupy the former sound between Barry Island and the mainland. The contractors built dams to connect each end of the island to the mainland, drained or pumped the water from the site and excavated it. They used the material to level the area around the docks and for the core of breakwaters to protect the entrance. Vale Of Glamorgan Council
The Vale of Glamorgan Council is the governing body for the Vale of Glamorgan, one of the Principal Areas of Wales. It was run by the Conservative Party after the 2008 United Kingdom local elections, taking over the council from no overall control. Following the 2012 elections, it reverted to no overall control, and remained as such following the 2017 and 2022 elections. Court is the name of an electoral ward in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales. It is represented by councillors on Barry Town Council and the Vale of Glamorgan Council. Description The Court ward covers the south of the Gibbonsdown area of the town, northeast of Barry town centre, but stretches south as far as Holton Road. There is a Gibbonsdown ward which borders to the northwest. According to the 2011 census the population of the ward was 4,748. The 2008 Vale of Glamorgan Council election took place on Thursday 1 May 2008 to elect members of Vale of Glamorgan Council in Wales. This was the same day as other United Kingdom local elections. Barry ( cy, Y Barri; ) is a town in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, on the north coast of the Bristol Channel approximately south-southwest of Cardiff. Barry is a seaside resort, with attractions including several beaches and the resurrected Barry Island Pleasure Park. According to Office for National Statistics 2016 estimate data, the population of Barry was 54,673. Once a small village, Barry has absorbed its larger neighbouring villages of Cadoxton and Barry Island, and now, Sully. It grew significantly from the 1880s with the development of Barry Docks, which in 1913 was the largest coal port in the world. Etymology The origin of the town's name is disputed. Barry Town Council is an elected town council serving Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan, one of the largest towns in Wales. Functions The town council describes itself as the only elected body dedicated solely to the interests of Barry residents. The 2012 Vale of Glamorgan Council election took place on Thursday 3 May 2012 to elect members of Vale of Glamorgan Council in Wales. This was the same day as other United Kingdom local elections. The previous full council election took place on 1 May 2008 and the next one took place on 4 May 2017. Election result The Conservatives lost control of the council after losing 14 seats. The Labour Party became the largest grouping, but failed to win enough seats for an overall majority. Baruc is the name of an electoral ward in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales. It covers the southern area of the town, including Barry Island, Cold Knap and the area around Romilly Park. The ward elects three county councillors to the Vale of Glamorgan Council and three councillors to Barry Town Council. The ward is currently represented by Plaid Cymru. According to the 2011 census the population of the ward was 10,621. In 2022 the number of county councillors was increased from two, to three, as a result of recommendations from the Local Democracy and Boundary Commission for Wales.
