Castelvetrano ( scn, Castiḍḍuvitranu) is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Trapani, Sicily, southern Italy. The archeological site of Selinunte is located within the municipal territory. The municipality borders with Campobello di Mazara, Mazara del Vallo, Menfi, Montevago, Partanna, Salemi and Santa Ninfa. History The first recorded mentions of Castelvetrano in the historical record date back to the 12th and 13th centuries. By the 15th century, records exist of a federation of local cities which includes Castelvetrano. The church of St. John, outside the city walls, dates back to this period and was founded in 1412. Economy The economy is based predominantly on farming, with the cultivation of vines and olive trees being the main focus. Woodworking (mainly furniture) is also an important sector. Nocellara del Belice is an olive cultivar from the Valle del Belice area of south-western Sicily. It is a dual-purpose olive, grown both for oil and for the table. Triscina Di Selinunte
Trìscina, also known as Trìscina di Selinunte is a hamlet of Castelvetrano, Italian town in the province of Trapani, in Sicily. It counts 645 residents. Geography Together with Marinella di Selinunte it is one of the two sea hamlets of Castelvetrano. It is about 2 km away from the archeological area of Selinunte, the ancient Greek town. It borders with Selinunte to the east and with Tre Fontane (Campobello di Mazara) to the west. Trìscina has long sandy beaches and shallow water sea. History The hamlet was born and developed from the second half of the 20th century, through the abusive construction of houses, without any urbanistic plan. For this reason, Triscina is often cited as an example of unauthorized development, sometimes together with Marinella. Selinunte
Selinunte (; grc, Σελῑνοῦς, Selīnoûs ; la, Selīnūs , ; scn, Silinunti ) was a rich and extensive ancient Greek city on the south-western coast of Sicily in Italy. It was situated between the valleys of the Cottone and Modione rivers. It now lies in the ''comune'' Castelvetrano, between the ''frazioni'' of Triscina di Selinunte in the west and Marinella di Selinunte in the east. The archaeological site contains many great temples, the earliest dating from 550 BC, with five centred on an acropolis. Alfonso Caruana (; born January 1, 1946) is an Italian-Canadian crime boss and member of the Sicilian Mafia and was the head of the Sicilian Cuntrera-Caruana Mafia clan's branch in Canada. Campobello di Mazara ( scn, Campubbeddu) is a town in the province of Trapani, Sicily, southern Italy. Its inhabitants are scattered in the town center and the minor seaside ''frazioni'' of Tre Fontane and Torretta Granitola, populated mostly during the summer period. Mazara del Vallo (; ) is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Trapani, southwestern Sicily, Italy. It lies mainly on the left bank at the mouth of the Mazaro river. It is an agricultural and fishing centre and its port gives shelter to the largest fishing fleet in Italy. Recently it has been a hotspot for migrants from North Africa.
