Cassini (lunar Crater)
Cassini is a lunar impact crater that is located in the Palus Nebularum, at the eastern end of Mare Imbrium. The crater was named after astronomers Giovanni Cassini and Jacques Cassini. To the northeast is the Promontorium Agassiz, the southern tip of the Montes Alpes mountain range. South by south-east of Cassini is the crater Theaetetus. To the northwest is the lone peak Mons Piton. Description The floor of Cassini is flooded, and is likely as old as the surrounding mare. The surface is peppered with a multitude of impacts, including a pair of significant craters contained entirely within the rim. Cassini A is the larger of these two, and it lies just north-east of the crater center. A hilly ridge area runs from this inner crater toward the south-east. Near the south-west rim of Cassini is the smaller crater Cassini B. The walls of this crater are narrow and irregular in form but remain intact despite the lava flooding. Beyond the crater rim is a significant and irregular outer ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Cassini Periodical Cicadas
The Cassini periodical cicadas are a pair of closely related species of periodical cicadas: ''Magicicada cassini'' (Fisher, 1852), having a 17-year life cycle, and '' Magicicada tredecassini'' (Alexander and Moore, 1962), a nearly identical species with a 13-year life cycle. Courting behavior of Cassini cicadas is unusual because large groups of males may sing and fly together in synchrony. Bursts of sound alternate with silence as thousands of males sing in unison, then leave perches and seek a new perch before the next ensemble song. Description All ''Magicicada'' species have a black dorsal thorax with red eyes and orange wing veins. Cassini periodical cicadas are smaller than decim periodical cicadas. The abdomen is black except for occasional faint orange-yellow marks on the ventral surface seen in some location. In a typical brood of periodical cicadas, decim and decula types will be present as well as cassini. The three different types have unique species song-types; th ... Cassini Projection
The Cassini projection (also sometimes known as the Cassini–Soldner projection or Soldner projection) is a map projection described by César-François Cassini de Thury in 1745. It is the transverse aspect of the equirectangular projection, in that the globe is first rotated so the central meridian becomes the "equator", and then the normal equirectangular projection is applied. Considering the earth as a sphere, the projection is composed of the operations: :x = \arcsin(\cos \varphi \sin \lambda) \qquad y = \arctan\left(\frac\right). where ''λ'' is the longitude from the central meridian and ''φ'' is the latitude. When programming these equations, the inverse tangent function used is actually the atan2 function, with the first argument sin ''φ'' and the second . The reverse operation is composed of the operations: :\varphi = \arcsin(\sin y \cos x) \qquad \lambda = \operatorname(\tan x, \cos y). In practice, the projection has always been applied to models of the ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Cassini Oval
In geometry, a Cassini oval is a quartic plane curve defined as the locus (mathematics), locus of points in the plane (geometry), plane such that the Product_(mathematics), product of the distances to two fixed points (Focus (geometry), foci) is constant. This may be contrasted with an ellipse, for which the ''sum'' of the distances is constant, rather than the product. Cassini ovals are the special case of polynomial lemniscates when the polynomial used has degree of a polynomial, degree 2. Cassini ovals are named after the astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini who studied them in the late 17th century. Cassini believed that the Sun traveled around the Earth on one of these ovals, with the Earth at one focus of the oval. Other names include Cassinian ovals, Cassinian curves and ovals of Cassini. Formal definition A Cassini oval is a set of points, such that for any point P of the set, the ''product'' of the distances , PP_1, ,\, , PP_2, to two fixed points P_1, P_2 is a consta ... Cassini, South Australia
__NOTOC__ Cassini is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located on the north coast of Kangaroo Island overlooking Investigator Strait about south-west of the state capital of Adelaide and about from the municipal seat of Kingscote. Its boundaries were created in 2002 in respect to “the long established name” which is derived from the cadastral unit of the Hundred of Cassini. The principal land use is agriculture with a small amount of land being zoned for conservation. The latter use consists of the protected areas of the Lathami Conservation Park and the Parndana Conservation Park, and the strip of land along the coastline. The locality includes the former Cassini Station Complex and Mulberry Tree which is listed on the South Australian Heritage Register. The 2016 Australian census which was conducted in August 2016 reports that Cassini had a population of 81 people. Cassini is located within the federal division of Mayo, the state electoral d ... Cassini Regio
Cassini Regio (adjective ''Cassinian'' ) is the enigmatic dark area that covers the leading half of Saturn's moon Iapetus. It is named after Giovanni Cassini, the discoverer of Iapetus; ' Regio' is a term used in planetary geology for a large area that is strongly differentiated in colour or albedo from its surroundings. The brighter half of Iapetus is composed of the Roncevaux Terra and the Saragossa Terra. The nature of the material that caused the extensive discoloration of Cassini Regio is not known, but it appears to be quite thin. It may be the result of cryovolcanism, a spattering of material from outer moons, or residue left by the sublimation of brighter ice. In December 2004 an image taken by the NASA ''Cassini'' probe revealed that a long ridge of high mountains runs down the centre of Cassini Regio, almost perfectly following Iapetus's equator. The origin of this extremely unusual feature is as yet unknown. ''Cassini'' completed a flyby of Iapetus in September ... Cassini (Martian Crater)
Cassini is a crater on Mars named in honour of the Italian astronomer Giovanni Cassini. The name was approved in 1973, by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature. The crater measures approximately 415 kilometers in diameter and can be found at 327.9°W and 23.4°N. It is in the Arabia quadrangle of Mars. Pictures of small craters on the floor of Cassini reveal multiple layers. Some of these layers can be easily seen in the pictures below. Many places on Mars show rocks arranged in layers. Rock can form layers in a variety of ways. Volcanoes, wind, or water can produce layers. A detailed discussion of layering with many Martian examples can be found in Sedimentary Geology of Mars. Recent research leads scientists to believe that some of the craters in Arabia may have held huge lakes. Cassini Crater probably once was full of water since its rim seems to have been breached by the waters. Both inflow and outflow channels have been ob ...
