Casino Theatre (Toronto)
The Casino Theatre was a live theatre, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was located at 87 Queen Street West across the street from the current site of Nathan Phillips Square. The structure was designed by architects Kaplan & Sprachman, who designed 21 other theatres in Toronto, and 48 elsewhere in Canada. The theatre opened in 1936 and demolished in 1960. It seated almost 1,200 patrons. The theatre hosted well-known performers, such as Johnny Rae, Patti Page, Gene Nelson, Pearl Bailey, Phil Silvers, Abbott and Costello, Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis Jr., Mickey Rooney, Frankie Laine, Sally Rand, Gypsy Rose Lee, Rose La Rose, Cup Cakes Cassidy, the Crewcuts, the Four Lads, Golden Gate Quartet, Billy Daniels and Rosemary Clooney. Gypsy Rose Lee (born Rose Louise Hovick, January 8, 1911 – April 26, 1970) was an American burlesque entertainer, stripper and vedette famous for her striptease act. Broadway Theatre (Toronto)
The Broadway Theatre was a burlesque live theatre and cinema in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The theatre was opened under the name of Globe Theatre, in 1918. It was renamed the Roxy Theatre in the early 1930s and assumed its final name, the Broadway Theatre, in 1937. It was located on the southwest corner of Bay Street, Toronto, Bay and Queen Street, Toronto, Queen streets at 75 Queen Street West. The Broadway was initially a traditional Burlesque theatre. In 1933, it was renamed the Roxy and offered girlie shows. The ''Toronto Sun'' is an English-language tabloid newspaper published daily in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The newspaper is one of several ''Sun'' tabloids published by Postmedia Network. Mike Filey
Mike Filey (October 11, 1941 – July 30, 2022) was a Canadian historian, radio host, journalist and author. He was awarded the Jean Hibbert Memorial Award in 2009 for promoting the city of Toronto and its history. Early life Born in 1941 in Toronto, Filey attended high school at North Toronto Collegiate Institute and earned a degree in chemical technology from Ryerson Polytechnical Institute. As a child, Filey lived with his family on Bathurst Street, just south of the iconic Honest Ed's. Career Filey began his career at what is now the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, working there for nine years. He then worked for five years at the Canadian National Exhibition and four years at Canada's Wonderland. Truancy
Truancy is any intentional, unjustified, unauthorised, or illegal absence from compulsory education. Doug Taylor (historian)
Doug Taylor (1938–2020) was a Canadian historian, professor, author and connoisseur of movie theatres. In two books, and multiple online articles, Taylor wrote about Toronto's history of beautiful cinemas. He published a history of selected neighbourhoods in 2010, a book on Toronto lost landmarks in 2018. '' Toronto Life magazine'' and ''Inside Toronto'' both profiled Taylor when he published ''Toronto Theaters and the Golden Age of the Silver Screen''. The ''Toronto Sun''s local historian, Mike Filey, used its publication as a jump-off for his own article on Toronto's cinema history. A stripper or exotic dancer is a person whose occupation involves performing striptease in a public adult entertainment venue such as a strip club. William Boone Daniels (September 12, 1915 – October 7, 1988) was an American singer active in the United States and Europe from the mid-1930s to 1988, notable for his hit recording of "That Old Black Magic" and his pioneering performances on early 1950s television. Golden Gate Quartet
The Golden Gate Quartet (a.k.a. The Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet) is an American vocal group. It was formed in 1934 and, with changes in membership, remains active. Origins and early career The group was founded as the Golden Gate Jubilee Singers in 1934, by four students at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, Virginia. The Four Lads
The Four Lads was a Canadian male singing quartet which, in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, earned many gold singles and albums.
