Doug Taylor (historian)
Doug Taylor (1938–2020) was a Canadian historian, professor, author and connoisseur of movie theatres. In two books, and multiple online articles, Taylor wrote about Toronto's history of beautiful cinemas. He published a history of selected neighbourhoods in 2010, a book on Toronto lost landmarks in 2018. '' Toronto Life magazine'' and ''Inside Toronto'' both profiled Taylor when he published ''Toronto Theaters and the Golden Age of the Silver Screen''. The ''Toronto Sun''s local historian, Mike Filey, used its publication as a jump-off for his own article on Toronto's cinema history. Taylor's parents immigrated to Canada from Newfoundland, when it was an independent country. Two of Taylor's books are memoirs of his experience growing up in an immigrant family. The ''Toronto Sun'' is an English-language tabloid newspaper published daily in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The newspaper is one of several ''Sun'' tabloids published by Postmedia Network. The newspaper's offices is located at Postmedia Place in downtown Toronto. The newspaper published its first edition in November 1971, after it had acquired the assets of the defunct ''Toronto Telegram'', and hired portions of the ''Telegram''s staff. In 1978, Toronto Sun Holdings and Toronto Sun Publishing were consolidated to form Sun Publishing (later renamed Sun Media Corporation). Mike Filey
Mike Filey (October 11, 1941 – July 30, 2022) was a Canadian historian, radio host, journalist and author. He was awarded the Jean Hibbert Memorial Award in 2009 for promoting the city of Toronto and its history. Early life Born in 1941 in Toronto, Filey attended high school at North Toronto Collegiate Institute and earned a degree in chemical technology from Ryerson Polytechnical Institute. As a child, Filey lived with his family on Bathurst Street, just south of the iconic Honest Ed's. Career Filey began his career at what is now the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, working there for nine years. He then worked for five years at the Canadian National Exhibition and four years at Canada's Wonderland. In 1972, Filey was an organizer of Heritage Toronto, a citizen's group interested in Toronto's history. From 1975 to 2020, he wrote the column, ''The Way We Were'' for the ''Toronto Sun''. A beach is a landform alongside a body of water which consists of loose particles. The particles composing a beach are typically made from rock, such as sand, gravel, shingle, pebbles, etc., or biological sources, such as mollusc shells or coralline algae. Sediments settle in different densities and structures, depending on the local wave action and weather, creating different textures, colors and gradients or layers of material. Though some beaches form on inland freshwater locations such as lakes and rivers, most beaches are in coastal areas where wave or current action deposits and reworks sediments. Erosion and changing of beach geologies happens through natural processes, like wave action and extreme weather events.
