Casa Central De La Universidad De Chile
The Casa Central de la Universidad de Chile, also known as ''Palacio de la Universidad de Chile'', is the main building for the Universidad de Chile, and is located at 1058 Alameda Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins, in Santiago, Chile. The building dates from 1872, and currently houses the rectorate, rooms used for ceremonial events and the Andrés Bello Archives, so-named to honor the lawyer who founded the university. It was declared a National Monument of Chile in 1974. The adjacent Universidad de Chile metro station was named after the building. History After its inauguration in 1843, the Universidad de Chile was in need of housing. Lucien Hénault
Lucien Ambroise Hénault (Bazoches-en-Dunois , January 30, 1823 - Paris, January 30, 1908) was a French architect and academic, noted for building and designing several of the main buildings in Santiago, Santiago de Chile in the mid- 19th century. Biography He was the son of François Denis Hénault and Marie Madeleine Doussain. Between 1844 and 1853 he studied at the Paris School of Fine Arts (''École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts''), at which he was an outstanding pupil, earning a medal for his project for a villa at Choisy in 1852. His mentor was the architect and professor, Louis-Hippolyte Lebas. Amanda Labarca
Amanda Labarca Hubertson (; 1886–1975), was a Chilean diplomat, educator, writer and feminist. Her work was directed mainly at improving the situation of Latin American women and women's suffrage in Chile. She was born Pinto Sepúlveda in Santiago, Chile, on December 5, 1886. Labarca's parents were Onofre Pinto Perez de Arce and Sabina Sepulveda. She adopted her husband's two surnames, Labarca Hubertson, after her marriage to Guillermo Labarca Hubertson during a trip to the U.S., amongst protest from her family. Education She received her early education at a school on San Isidro Street, in Santiago, and then continued her education at the Isabel Le Brun de Pinochet Lyceum. The 2010 Chile earthquake and tsunami ( es, Terremoto del 27F) occurred off the coast of central Chile on Saturday, 27 February at 03:34 local time (06:34 UTC), having a magnitude of 8.8 on the moment magnitude scale, with intense shaking lasting for about three minutes. It was felt strongly in six Chilean regions (from Valparaíso in the north to Araucanía in the south) that together make up about 80 percent of the country's population. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) the cities experiencing the strongest shaking—VIII (''Severe'') on the Mercalli intensity scale (MM)—were Concepción, Arauco, and Coronel. 1985 Algarrobo Earthquake
An earthquake measuring 8.0 struck Santiago Chile on 3 March 1985, and ended up killing 177 people and injuring about 2,575 others. This earthquake was being felt between the northern Antofagasta Region and the southern Los Lagos Region. It was felt with a maximum intensity of VIII on the Mercalli intensity scale. Damage and effects The quake left 177 people dead, 2,575 injured, 85,358 houses damaged or destroyed and about a million people homeless. Many landslides were registered too, pavement breaks with the destruction of the Pan-American Highway in several points, broken-down bridges and considerable damage in affected town's infrastructure, with a long interruption on basic services. Mario Toral
Mario Toral Muñoz (born in Santiago, Chile, on 12 February 1934) is a Chilean painter and photographer. Career At the age of 16, Toral moved to Buenos Aires, where he saved money to enroll in the Escuela de Bellas Artes (School of Fine Arts) in Montevideo, Uruguay. He later went to Brazil, where at 21 the first exhibition of his work was shown at the Sao Paulo Museum of Modern Art. In 1957, Toral moved to France, where he studied at the School of Fine Arts in Paris. Between 1973 and 1992, Toral lived in New York City. Major works completed during this period include ''Prisioneras de Piedra'' (Prisoners of Stone, 1974–1977) and ''Mascaras'' (Masks, 1979–1981). The Santiago Metro ( es, Metro de Santiago) is a rapid transit system serving the city of Santiago, the capital of Chile. It currently consists of seven lines (numbered 1-6 and 4A), 136 stations, and of revenue route. The system is managed by the state-owned Metro S.A. and is the first and only rapid transit system in the country. The Santiago Metro carries around 2.5 million passengers daily. Seguro Obrero Massacre
The Seguro Obrero massacre ( es, Matanza del Seguro Obrero, lit=Workers Insurance's Massacre) occurred on September 5, 1938, and was the Chilean government's response to an attempted coup d'état by the National Socialist Movement of Chile (MNSCh), whose members were known at the time as ("Nazis"), with some differences that justified their option for a different name. After a failed coup involving a stand-off and a shootout, about 60 Nacistas who had surrendered after being given assurances, were summarily shot. About twenty others were killed during the fighting.
