McMahan, Texas
McMahan is an unincorporated community in Caldwell County, in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 125 in 2000. It is located within the Greater Austin metropolitan area. History McMahan was originally called Wild Cat (also spelled Wildcat) and Whizzerville. Ambrose Tinney was given a land grant to establish the community in June 1832 and new settlers began arriving in the early 1840s. The Comanche Native American tribe attempted to kill Tinney but was unsuccessful. When it was known as Wildcat, it had an early store and a saloon. When it was called Whizzerville, there was a saloon on the opposite side of Tinney Creek. A post office was established in the community in 1898, but postal authorities thought the name Whizzerville was too long. They also accepted the name Raymondville. Tilmon, Texas
Tilmon is an unincorporated community in Caldwell County, in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 117 in 2000. It is located within the Greater Austin metropolitan area. History Tilmon developed around a mill called Tilmon's Mill. This mill made molasses from cane crops grown in the bottom of nearby creeks during the antebellum Texas era. A post office was established at Tilmon in 1890 and remained in operation until 1906. There was only one business and several homes in the settlement in 1936. It had 25 inhabitants and two businesses in 1940. Its population grew to 40 in 1949 and decreased back to 25 settlers from 1970 to 1990. There were no businesses in the community in 1990. The county highway map in 1984 showed a community hall near the roadway. Its population was 117 in 2000. The Old Settler's Music Festival is held in the community. Taylorsville is an unincorporated community in Caldwell County, in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 20 in 2000. It is located within the Greater Austin metropolitan area. History The community was named for a local landowner. When the post office in Elm Grove closed in 1890, another one was established at Taylorsville that same year. The settlement had three churches, two steam-powered cotton gins, two general stores, and a population of 150 inhabitants in 1892. The community's post office shut down in 1907. The population then dropped to 25 in the 1930s. It then grew to 40 residents in the late 1940s, but it was not enough to maintain local businesses. The community store closed in 1953. Seawillow is an unincorporated community in Caldwell County, Texas, United States. According to the '' Handbook of Texas'', the community had an estimated population of 100 in 2000. It is located within the Greater Austin metropolitan area. History Seawillow was named for Margaret Ann Wells (née Pipkin). She went by the name of Seawillow due to the fact that she was born under a willow tree in 1855. Prior to her birth, her mother was rescued by the slaves that worked for her family when she got caught in a flood. The area in what is now known as Seawillow today was named for Wells at a request from her husband after she moved with her family to this present-day area. Saint Johns Colony, Texas
Saint John Colony is an unincorporated community in Caldwell County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 150 in 2000. It is located within the Greater Austin metropolitan area. History St. John Colony started with a group of Black farming families who came to the community from Webberville and purchased land here in the early 1870s. Since their leader was the Reverend John Henry Winn, the town was first called Winn's Colony. After the building of the St. John Regular Missionary Baptist Church was established, the community was renamed. The community's boundaries were somewhat hazy but included an area of up to of land. 40 families lived in the community in the 1980s and had three churches. Mendoza is an unincorporated community in Caldwell County, in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 100 in 2000. It is located within the Greater Austin metropolitan area. History A post office was established at Mendoza in 1892 and remained in operation until 1911. Sources differ as to whether the community was named for Antonio de Mendoza or a local settler. The 1936 county highway map showed a church, a cemetery, an industrial site, several other businesses, and numerous homes in the community. Only one business was reported in the community in 1987. In the first quarter of the 20th century, Mendoza had a population of 200 residents. Elm Grove is an unincorporated community in Caldwell County, in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the Handbook of Texas, there were no population estimates made available for the community in 2000. It is located within the Greater Austin metropolitan area. History A post office was established at Elm Grove in 1874 and remained in operation until 1890. The community then had steam-powered sawmills and gristmills, three cotton gins, a church, and 150 inhabitants by the mid-1880s. Farmers in the area shipped cotton and produce. History The city of Lockhart is named after Byrd Lockhart, an assistant surveyor of Green DeWitt and reportedly the first Anglo to set foot in Caldwell County.
