Taylorsville is an unincorporated community in Caldwell County, in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 20 in 2000. It is located within the Greater Austin metropolitan area. History The community was named for a local landowner. When the post office in Elm Grove closed in 1890, another one was established at Taylorsville that same year. The settlement had three churches, two steam-powered cotton gins, two general stores, and a population of 150 inhabitants in 1892. The community's post office shut down in 1907. The population then dropped to 25 in the 1930s. It then grew to 40 residents in the late 1940s, but it was not enough to maintain local businesses. The community store closed in 1953. Lockhart is a city and the county seat of Caldwell County, Texas, United States. According to the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, its population was 14,379. History The city of Lockhart is named after Byrd Lockhart, an assistant surveyor of Green DeWitt and reportedly the first Anglo to set foot in Caldwell County. Lockhart was the site of a victory of the Texans over the Comanche, at the Battle of Plum Creek in 1840. Lockhart was originally called "Plum Creek", but the name was later changed to Lockhart. Dale, Texas
Dale is an unincorporated community in Caldwell County, Texas, United States. The settlement had a population of 500 in 2000. It is located within the Greater Austin metropolitan area. History Dale was named for the valley in which it is located. The Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad arrived in 1880 and the town's post office was granted that same year. Within five years, Dale had a population of 75. The town had three stores, a gristmill, and a cotton gin, which shipped cotton into the community. By 1914, Dale had a population of 250 and 15 businesses, but this declined to 200 between 1925 and 1943. The 1936 county highway map showed several homes, two churches, several businesses, and a seasonal industry in the community. McMahan, Texas
McMahan is an unincorporated community in Caldwell County, in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 125 in 2000. It is located within the Greater Austin metropolitan area. History McMahan was originally called Wild Cat (also spelled Wildcat) and Whizzerville. Ambrose Tinney was given a land grant to establish the community in June 1832 and new settlers began arriving in the early 1840s. The Comanche Native American tribe attempted to kill Tinney but was unsuccessful. When it was known as Wildcat, it had an early store and a saloon. When it was called Whizzerville, there was a saloon on the opposite side of Tinney Creek. A post office was established in the community in 1898, but postal authorities thought the name Whizzerville was too long. They also accepted the name Raymondville. Elm Grove is an unincorporated community in Caldwell County, in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the Handbook of Texas, there were no population estimates made available for the community in 2000. It is located within the Greater Austin metropolitan area. History A post office was established at Elm Grove in 1874 and remained in operation until 1890. The community then had steam-powered sawmills and gristmills, three cotton gins, a church, and 150 inhabitants by the mid-1880s. Farmers in the area shipped cotton and produce. Most of Elm Grove was in ruins in the 1920s. A community center was established in 1853 and was used for community singing throughout the 1960s and was renovated in the 1980s. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau.
