Carver (crater)
Carver is a Lunar craters, lunar impact crater that is located on the far side of the Moon, due east of the walled plain Van der Waals (crater), Van der Waals. To the northeast is the crater Rosseland (crater), Rosseland, and to the south-southeast lies Kozyrev (crater), Kozyrev. Despite some wear due to impacts, the wide inner wall of this crater still contains some wiktionary:terrace, terraces. There are several tiny craters along the rim edge and the inner walls, but no notable intersecting impacts. Carver overlies the north-northeast rim of the old, heavily worn Carver M. The interior floor of Carver contains a small central peak at the midpoint, and several small craterlets in the southern half. The remainder of the floor is relatively featureless, and has a diameter about half the diameter of the crater. Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter
The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) is a NASA robotic spacecraft currently orbiting the Moon in an eccentric polar mapping orbit. Data collected by LRO have been described as essential for planning NASA's future human and robotic missions to the Moon. Its detailed mapping program is identifying safe landing sites, locating potential resources on the Moon, characterizing the radiation environment, and demonstrating new technologies. Launched on June 18, 2009, in conjunction with the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS), as the vanguard of NASA's Lunar Precursor Robotic Program, LRO was the first United States mission to the Moon in over ten years. Kozyrev (crater)
Kozyrev is an impact crater on the far side of the Moon. It lies to the south-southeast of the crater Carver, and to the southwest of the Roche–Pauli crater pair. This is an eroded crater formation, although most of the outer rim remains well-defined. There is a small, slightly skewed crater laid across the north-northwestern rim. Attached to the southeast of this feature in the northern part of Kozyrev's interior floor is a smaller, bowl-shaped crater. The remainder of the interior is marked only by tiny craterlets. The inner wall is slightly wider along the eastern side than elsewhere. Namesake Kozyrev was named after the Russian astrophysicist Nikolai Aleksandrovich Kozyrev. Regarded as the most promising Russian astronomer of his time, Kozyrev fell victim to the Stalinist purges, spending 10 years in Gulags. It is written by Jonathan McDowell, a Center for Astrophysics Harvard & Smithsonian astrophysicist. It is updated as McDowell's schedule permits, but he tries to publish two issues each month. Rosseland (crater)
Rosseland is a Lunar craters, lunar impact crater on the Far side (Moon), far side of the Moon. It lies less than one crater diameter to the northeast of Carver (crater), Carver, and about the same distance to the west of the larger Roche (crater), Roche. To the northwest lies the smaller Coblentz (lunar crater), Coblentz. This formation overlies the southern rim of the larger satellite crater Rosseland V. The rim of Rosseland is worn and uneven. The interior floor is relatively level and has some patches of lower-albedo material along the edges of the inner wall. George Washington Carver
George Washington Carver ( 1864 – January 5, 1943) was an American agricultural scientist and inventor who promoted alternative crops to cotton and methods to prevent soil depletion. He was one of the most prominent black scientists of the early 20th century. While a professor at Tuskegee Institute, Carver developed techniques to improve types of soils depleted by repeated plantings of cotton. He wanted poor farmers to grow other crops, such as peanuts and sweet potatoes, as a source of their own food and to improve their quality of life. The most popular of his 44 practical bulletins for farmers contained 105 food recipes using peanuts. Although he spent years developing and promoting numerous products made from peanuts, none became commercially successful. Apart from his work to improve the lives of farmers, Carver was also a leader in promoting environmentalism. He received numerous honors for his work, including the Spingarn Medal of the NAACP. Van Der Waals (crater)
Van der Waals is a lunar impact crater on the far side of the Moon. It is a heavily eroded feature with an irregular outer rim. The edge is lowest along the southern side where it is little more than a circular crest along the ground. It is more developed along the northern side, but the rim is notched and rugged. The satellite crater Van der Waals W is attached to the exterior of the northeast, and Van der Waals H intrudes into the rim along the southeast. The interior floor is relatively even and featureless, with only a few tiny craterlets to mark the surface. Nearby craters of note include Clark to the north, Carver to the east, and Pikel'ner to the southeast. About two crater diameters to the west-southwest is Lebedev. Far Side Of The Moon
The far side of the Moon is the lunar hemisphere that always faces away from Earth, opposite to the Near side of the Moon, near side, because of synchronous rotation in the Moon's orbit. Compared to the near side, the far side's terrain is rugged, with a multitude of impact craters and relatively few flat and dark lunar mare, lunar maria ("seas"), giving it an appearance closer to other barren places in the Solar System such as Mercury (planet), Mercury and Callisto (moon), Callisto. It has one of the largest craters in the Solar System, the South Pole–Aitken basin. The hemisphere is sometimes called the "dark side of the Moon", where "dark" means "unknown" instead of "lacking sunlight" each side of the Moon experiences two weeks of sunlight while the opposite side experiences two weeks of night.
