Carsten Podlesch
Carsten Podlesch (born 6 September 1969 in Berlin) is a German Motor-paced racing, stayer and the World Champion in motor-paced racing. Career Podlesch comes from a family that has been very involved in motor-paced racing. His father Rainer Podlesch was an Amateur World Champion twice, and his uncle :de:Karsten Podlesch, Karsten Podlesch used to operate as a pacer. Podlesch became a stayer at the age of 19. During his career that spanned almost four decades he gained the World Championship twice, European Championship thrice, and the German Championship thirteen times making him one of the most successful motor-paced cyclists ever. With his uncle as pacer the Podlesch/Podlesch team gained the 2000 European Championship. Motor-paced racing and motor-paced cycling refer to cycling behind a pacer in a car or more usually on a motorcycle. The cyclist (or stayer in this case) follows as close as they can to benefit from the slipstream of their pacer. The first paced races were behind other cyclists, sometimes as many as five riders on the same tandem. Bordeaux-Paris and record attempts have been ridden behind cars. More usually races or training are behind motorcycles. Origins of pacing Cyclists started to use tandem bicycles as pacers in the late 19th century. Rainer Podlesch
Rainer Podlesch (born 4 November 1944) is a retired German cyclist who was active between 1966 and 1983. He won a silver medal at the 1968 Summer Olympics in the 4000 m team pursuit. In this event he competed for the West Germany team in the preliminaries, but was replaced in the final due to injury. At the next Olympics he took part in the 100 km team time trial and finished in 20th place. He also won eight medals at the UCI Motor-paced World Championships in 1971–1983, including two gold medals in 1978 and 1983. UCI Track Cycling World Championships
The UCI Track Cycling World Championships are the set of world championship events for the various disciplines and distances in track cycling. They are regulated by the Union Cycliste Internationale. Before 1900, they were administered by the UCI's predecessor, the International Cycling Association (ICA). Current events include: time trial, keirin, individual pursuit, team pursuit, points race, scratch race, sprint, team sprint, omnium and madison. Women's events are generally shorter than men's.
