Carry Pothuis-Smit
Wilhelmina Carolina Benjamina "Carry" Pothuis-Smit (12 February 1872 – 30 August 1951) was a politician and feminist in the Netherlands. She was the first woman elected to the Senate of the Netherlands on 23 March 1920. Life The daughter of Barend Marinus Smit and Wilhelmina Carolina Benjamina van den Honert, she was born Wilhelmina Carolina Benjamina Smit in Amsterdam. The Senate ( or simply ' , literally "First Chamber of the States General", or sometimes ' ) is the upper house of the States General, the legislature of the Netherlands. Its 75 members are elected on lists by the members of the twelve States-Provincial and four electoral colleges for the Senate every four years, within three months of the provincial elections. All provinces and colleges have different electoral weight depending on their population. Members of the Senate tend to be veteran or part-time politicians at the national level, often having other roles. Despite Dutch neutrality, Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands on 10 May 1940 as part of Fall Gelb (Case Yellow). On 15 May 1940, one day after the bombing of Rotterdam, the Dutch forces surrendered. The Dutch government and the royal family relocated to London. Princess Juliana and her children sought refuge in Ottawa, Canada until after the war. The invaders placed the Netherlands under German occupation, which lasted in some areas until the German surrender in May 1945. International Socialist Women's Conferences
During the period of the Second International several International Socialist Women's Conferences were held by the representatives of the women organizations of the affiliated Socialist parties. The first two were held in conjunction with the main International Congresses of the Second International, while the third was held in Berne in 1915.
