Carrig-Riverstown GAA
Carrig & Riverstown GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located near Birr, County Offaly, Ireland. The club is primarily concerned with the game of hurling. History Located outside Birr, County Offaly, Carrig & Riverstown GAA Club is geographically located in County Tipperary. The club was founded in 1933 and had always been affiliated to the Offaly County Board. The club has spent most of its existence operating in the junior grade, winning their first two Offaly JHC titles in 1946 and 1955. This was followed by an Offaly IHC title in 1958 and senior status for the first time. Further JHC titles were won in 1971, 1979 and 1995 before winning two more IHC titles in 1996 and 2023. Birr, County Offaly
Birr (; ga, Biorra, meaning "plain of water") is a town in County Offaly, Ireland. Between 1620 and 1899 it was called Parsonstown, after the Parsons family who were local landowners and hereditary Earls of Rosse. Birr is a designated Irish ''Heritage Town'' with a carefully preserved Georgian heritage. Birr itself has graceful wide streets and elegant buildings. Many of the houses in John's Place and Oxmantown Mall have exquisite fanlight windows of the Georgian period. Hurling ( ga, iománaíocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. The objective of the game is for players to use an ash wood stick called a hurley (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponent's goalposts either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points. The Offaly Junior A Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition contested by lower-tier Offaly GAA clubs. The Offaly County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1907. The national media covers the competition. History The junior championship dates back to 1907. It was the second hurling championship to be established in Ofaly, and was originally seen as a second tier championship for teams that were too weak for the senior hurling championships. Kinnitty defeated Kilcormac–Killoughey in the 2020 championship decider, played in the summer of 2021 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Gaelic games. The Offaly Intermediate Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition contested by mid-tier Offaly GAA clubs. The Offaly County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1929. The national media covers the competition. The Offaly Senior Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Molloy Environmental Senior Hurling Championship) is an annual hurling competition contested by top-tier Offaly GAA clubs. The Offaly County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1896. Shinrone are the title holders (2022) defeating Kilcormac–Killoughey in the Final.
