Caroline Quarlls
Caroline Quarlls (1826–1892) was the first enslaved person to travel through Wisconsin using the Underground Railroad. She reached Canada and freedom in 1842. Multiple abolitionists helped Caroline on her journey to Canada even as pursuers followed continuously. She married a freedman in Canada, becoming Caroline Quarlls Watkins. Early life Caroline Quarlls was born in St. Louis in 1826, enslaved by her paternal grandfather. Robert Pryor Quarlls (also Quarles), was her father and owner. Her mother had married a successful blacksmith who was born free. Quarlls' mother and her sister were dead by the time she was sixteen, but Quarlls had been in contact with her stepfather who was very kind to her and talked with her about her plans to escape slavery. Underground Railroad
The Underground Railroad was a network of clandestine routes and safe houses established in the United States during the early- to mid-19th century. It was used by enslaved African Americans primarily to escape into free states and Canada. The network was assisted by abolitionists and others sympathetic to the cause of the escapees. The enslaved persons who risked escape and those who aided them are also collectively referred to as the "Underground Railroad". Samuel Brown (Wisconsin Politician)
Samuel Brown (January 8, 1804 – December 22, 1874) was an American pioneer and politician in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Background and arrival in Wisconsin Territory Brown was born in Belchertown, Massachusetts, and grew up on a farm in the area. At age 18 he left the farm to learn the carpentry trade, and in 1833 moved to Chicago, Illinois to work as a builder. In 1834, he came to Milwaukee in the Wisconsin Territory at the request of Solomon Juneau, making the trip together with Horace Chase and Morgan L. Burdick. Brown moved with his family and settled permanently in Milwaukee in 1835, and worked as a builder along with his brother Daniel, including building a store for Juneau at the corner of Water Street and Wisconsin Avenue, and the first county courthouse of Milwaukee County. Lyman Goodnow
Lyman Goodnow (1799–1884), a resident of Waukesha, Wisconsin, was a conductor on the Underground Railroad. Early life Born to Asa and Lydia Warren Goodnow on February 12, 1799, Lyman Goodnow was a native of Rutland, Massachusetts. In 1805, his parents moved the family to the wilderness of Potsdam, New York. After school, he did farming before going to Canada to work as a lumberman. He moved to Lowell, Massachusetts where he worked in construction, and then worked for a railroad and followed by boating at Buffalo, New York. Guy Beckley (1803–1847) was a Methodist Episcopal minister, abolitionist, Underground Railroad stationmaster, and lecturer. The Guy Beckley House is on the National Park Service Underground Railroad Network to Freedom and the Journey to Freedom tour. It stands next to Beckley Park, which was named after him.
