Carolina Lindström
Carolina Lindström, née ''Lundström'' (1812–1892), was a Swedish milliner. She was known in Stockholm as "Evening Star", because she was often seen working during the night. Life Her mother was a business woman and she herself saved her money until she could afford to become an apprentice to the top hat maker in Stockholm, a French woman. Lindström had her own shop at Västerlånggatan 40 in 1842. She had a large web of contacts; at the death of the king in 1844, she was alerted by the footmen at the royal palace so that she was able to acquire all the black mourning ribbons from the other milliners in the capital before the death had been publicly known. She was very successful and opened a second shop at Hornsgatan. In 1847, she married a man who squandered all her money on gambling, but she quickly recouped it. Hatmaking
Hat-making or millinery is the design, manufacture and sale of hats and other headwear. A person engaged in this trade is called a milliner or hatter. Historically, milliners, typically women shopkeepers, produced or imported an inventory of garments for men, women, and children and sold these garments in their millinery shop. Many milliners worked as both milliner and fashion designer, such as Rose Bertin, Jeanne Lanvin, and Coco Chanel. The millinery industry benefited from industrialization during the nineteenth century. In 1889 in London and Paris, over 8,000 women were employed in millinery, and in 1900 in New York, some 83,000 people, mostly women, were employed in millinery. Västerlånggatan
Västerlånggatan ("the Western Long Street") is a street in Gamla stan, the old town of Stockholm, Sweden. Stretching southward between the squares Mynttorget and Järntorget, it follows the course of the city's now demolished 13th-century defensive wall. The blocks along the street are elongated but only a few meters in width; those on the eastern side oriented lengthwise, and those on the western crosswise. Only four blocks thus forms the eastern side of the street while some 20 are lined-up along the western side. Anna Maria Thalén
Anna Maria Thalén (1781-1851) was a Swedish fashion trader. She belonged to the leading in her profession in early 19th-century Stockholm and are mentioned in contemporary memoirs and diary literature. Anna Maria Thalén was married to the candle manufacturer Vilhelm Casper Thalén. She is referred to as "Fashion maker or Fashion trader", milliner and trader of accessories. Officially, she sold accessories and a number of fashion items such as shawls and feathers, repaired, remade and washed such items, and provided her clients with the names of seamstresses and other fashion workers with whom she worked. This profession was a result of the fact that seamstresses worked in a grey zone prior to '' the abolition of the guilds in 1846'' and formally only allowed to repair and remake old clothes so as not to intrude upon the taylors' guild privilege, while in practice, they were both tolerated by the authorities and favored by the clients. Augusta Lundin
Augusta Lundin (13 June 1840 in Kristianstad – 20 February 1919) was a Swedish fashion designer. She is considered to be the first international Swedish fashion designer as well as the first well known fashion designer in Sweden. Early years and education Born to tailor Anders Lundin and Christina Andersdotter in Kristianstad, she learned the profession as a child, along with her sister, Hulda Lundin. Career She later moved to Stockholm, where she was employed at the Emma Hellgren hatshop in 1863–65 and the fashion studio of C L Flory & co in 1865–67. In 1867, she started her own fashion studio, and in 1874, she made her first study trip to Paris, and started her own fashion paper. Lundin made study trips to Paris once a year.
