The 2005 Carolina Challenge Cup was a four-team round robin pre-season competition hosted by the Charleston Battery. It was the second edition of the tournament. San Jose Earthquakes
The San Jose Earthquakes are an American professional soccer team based in San Jose, California. The Earthquakes compete as a member club of the Western Conference of Major League Soccer (MLS). Originally as the San Jose Clash, the franchise began play in 1996 as one of the charter members of the league. The Earthquakes took part in the first game in MLS history, defeating D.C. United 1–0. The Earthquakes have won two MLS Cup titles (2001, 2003) and two Supporters' Shields (2005, 2012). Alejandro Moreno
Alejandro Enrique Moreno Riera (born July 8, 1979) is a Venezuelan former footballer who played as a forward, and who is currently a television commentator for ESPN FC, ESPN Deportes and ESPN Latin America. Moreno won three MLS Cups during his professional career. Moreno was chosen in 2021 to work as a commentator in the 2020 European Championship. Career College Moreno spent a year in Texas at age 12 and spent succeeding summers there before earning a scholarship for four years of college soccer at UNC Greensboro. He finished his college career fourth on the team's all-time scoring lists, with 65 goals and 25 assists, having been named first team NSCAA All-South all four years with the team. Gregory Simmonds
Gregory Simmonds (born 16 December 1975) is a retired Jamaican soccer player who played professionally in the USL First Division. He is currently a men's soccer athletic trainer for Virginia Commonwealth University. Simmonds attended Howard University, playing on the men's soccer team from 1995 to 1998. He graduated as the all-time leading scorer for the Bison. In 1999, Simmonds turned professional with the Hershey Wildcats of the USL A-League. He scored sixteen goals that season and was selected as the A-League Rookie of the Year. His scoring touch led to D.C. United calling him up in January 2000 for two games in the 2000 CONCACAF Champions' Cup. He came on for Jaime Moreno in a 17 January 2000 victory over L.D. Alajuelense. Christian Gómez
Christian Gómez (born 7 November 1974) is an Argentine former professional footballer. Career Argentina Gómez began playing professional soccer at the age of 17 with Argentine club Nueva Chicago, which was at the time playing in the second division. He played with the team from 1991 to 1997, appearing in 155 games and scoring 46 goals. In 1997, Gómez moved to one of Argentina's largest and most successful clubs, CA Independiente, which he would play for from 1997 to 1999, scoring 12 goals in 80 games. He moved to Argentinos Juniors, where he would finish out the second half of 1999–2000 season. Gómez then returned to Nueva Chicago, where he would help the team earn promotion to the first division, while scoring 14 goals in 63 games. Mike Petke
Mike Petke (born January 30, 1976) is an American former soccer player and coach who was most recently head coach of Major League Soccer club Real Salt Lake. Prior to his tenure with Real Salt Lake, he was head coach of the New York Red Bulls, leading them to the Supporters' Shield in 2013. Playing career College Petke attended St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School in West Islip, New York, where he was selected as an All-American, before moving on to play college soccer in Southern Connecticut State University. In 1995, he led SCSU to the NCAA Division II National title and was named Conference Rookie of the Year. Thabiso "Boyzzz" Khumalo (born 27 October 1980 in Soweto) is a former South African footballer. Since 2019, he has been head coach of AFC Ann Arbor's women's side in the USL W League. Early life and education As a boy, Khumalo played under Farouk Khan at the "Super Centre" at the Transnet School of Excellence, before moving to the United States at the age of 16, settling in Kentucky. Eliseo Antonio Quintanilla Ortíz (born 5 February 1983) is a former Salvadoran professional footballer. Jaime Moreno Morales (born 19 January 1974) is a Bolivian former professional footballer now serving as Youth Academy Technical Training Coach for D.C. United in Major League Soccer, and as the head coach of D.C. United's U-23 side. Moreno began his career at Club Blooming and then played for Colombia's Independiente Santa Fe before spending two seasons at the English club Middlesbrough. The rest of his career was spent at D.C. United apart from one season at the New York MetroStars in 2003, and he was the all-time leading scorer in Major League Soccer at the time of his retirement in 2010. Knox Cameron (born September 17, 1983 in Kingston) is a Jamaican-born American soccer player who most recently played for AFC Ann Arbor in the National Premier Soccer League. Career College and Amateur Cameron grew up in New York City, attended Cardinal Spellman High School in The Bronx, and played college soccer at the University of Michigan, where he is second in the school's all-time record for goals (28) and points (72), and was named Big Ten Player of the Year his junior year.
