Carol McCartney
Carol McCartney is a singer on the Canadian jazz scene and a former Canadian beauty competition winner. Family and early life McCartney grew up on Verobeach Blvd, Toronto. She went to Gulfstream Public School and then later Emery Collegiate Institute. At the age of 16 her father entered her in the Miss Toronto pageant. She won the 1978 title and was the third runner up in the Miss Canada event. She got her Bachelor of Music Theatre Performance degree from Sheridan college in 1981. She has been the featured singer with the Toronto, Vancouver, Nashville and Detroit orchestras and at least twenty more. Her album ''A Night in Tunisia'' was very well received and was in good standing with the critics. She has had a street named after her. In 2013, The City of Toronto named a Weston Street "McCartney Street", as she grew up there. The Juno Awards, more popularly known as the JUNOS, are awards presented annually to Canadian musical artists and bands to acknowledge their artistic and technical achievements in all aspects of music. Terry Clarke (drummer)
Terence Michael "Terry" Clarke C.M. (born August 20, 1944, Vancouver) is a Canadian jazz drummer. Clarke studied percussion with Jim Blackley and played with Chris Gage and Dave Robbins early in his career. From 1965 to 1967 he toured in a quintet with John Handy, and joined The Fifth Dimension in 1967, remaining with the ensemble until 1969. In 1970, he moved to Toronto, where he began a longstanding association with Rob McConnell's group, Boss Brass; he also played with Ed Bickert, Ruby Braff, Jim Galloway, Sonny Greenwich, Jay McShann, Emily Remler, and Frank Rosolino. In 1976, he toured with Jim Hall for the first time and in 1981 did an international tour with Oscar Peterson. Natural Gas (musical Group)
Natural Gas was a Canadian rock music group featuring a horn section. Consisting of eight members, it was formed by George Olliver. They released an album and a single in 1970. They had hit that year with "All Powerful Man". Their self-titled album also made the charts. Background In a similar vein to Lighthouse, Chicago and Blood Sweat & Tears, the group was put together by George Olliver. The group's line up included drummer Graham Lear, and George Olliver. Founder Olliver had previously been with Mandala and George Olliver & The Soul Children which was formed in 1967. Other members were, Dave “Hulk” Berman, Dave Classic, Leon Feigenbaum, Dave Tamblyn, Carl Watral and Brian Wray. Motherlode (band)
Motherlode was a Canadian pop rock group formed in 1969 in London, Ontario. The group scored some success in the US with their single, " When I Die", which hit #1 in Canada and #18 on the U.S. ''Billboard'' Hot 100 chart in 1969. The group didn't have a bass guitarist. William Smith would play the bass notes on his keyboard. They did however use bass players on their studio recordings. The act remains a one-hit wonder despite two more singles in the top 100 in Canada. Biography Early years The first connection can be traced back to the Blue Note club on February 22, 1964 where the club's house band, The Silhouettes were playing. Truck (musical Group)
Truck was a 1970s Canadian rock group with a musical style similar to Natural Gas and Lighthouse. Signed to the Capitol label, they released two singles and an album. The outfit started out as Sound Spectrum in 1966 and by the early 1970s they had absorbed experienced musicians from groups Natural Gas and Motherlode. Their name had also been changed to Truck! The 1970s lineup was completely different to what it was when the group began. A busy live attraction, they did reasonably well with their album ''Truck'' which had an unbroken run for about a month-and-a-half in the charts. Brian Wray
Brian Wray was a veteran Canadian musician and musical arranger. He had been a member of three major Canadian bands, Natural Gas in the late 1960s, Motherlode and Truck in the early 1970s. He also worked with Lisa Hartt, Freedom North, Moe Koffman, David Johannesson and other artists. In later years he moved more towards the jazz genre. Background Born Brian Francis Wray, coming from Montreal, he was an organ & piano player. He was once a member of the group Five of a Kind which also had a pre-Mashmakhan Brian Edwards in their line up. Lorne Lofsky
Lorne Lofsky (born May 10, 1954) is a Canadian jazz guitarist who was a member of the Oscar Peterson Quartet. Lofsky began playing rock music at school dances but later took an interest in jazz after hearing the album ''Kind of Blue'' by Miles Davis. In the 1970s, he attended York University in Toronto and studied music while working at clubs in Toronto. He worked with Canadian musicians Butch Watanabe and Jerry Toth and with visiting Americans Pepper Adams, Bob Brookmeyer, and Chet Baker. In 1980, Lofsky met Canadian pianist Oscar Peterson, who produced his first album, ''It Could Happen to You''. He toured with Peterson in the 1980s, and he toured and recorded as a member of Peterson's quartet and quintet in the 1990s. Brian Dickinson (born 1961 in Guelph, Ontario) is a Juno Award-winning pianist. Career Dickinson was part of the backing group for Carol McCartney. Paul Zaza
Paul Zaza (born 1952) is a Canadian Genie Award-winning film score and songwriter who worked frequently with director Bob Clark and with fellow composer Carl Zittrer. He has composed scores for more than 100 films. Early life and education Originally from Toronto, Zaza trained as a classical pianist, graduating from the Royal Conservatory of Music. Career In 1980 Zaza won the Genie Award for Best Music Score alongside Carl Zittrer for their work on ''Murder by Decree''. That year the pair teamed up again to write the score for the film ''Prom Night''. ''All About Jazz'' is a website established by Michael Ricci in 1995. A volunteer staff publishes news, album reviews, articles, videos, and listings of concerts and other events having to do with jazz. Ricci maintains a related site, ''Jazz Near You'', about local concerts and events.
