Carol Chilton
Carol Chilton Thomas Anthony (December 13, 1907 – October 27, 1996) was an American dancer, part of the duo Chilton and Thomas, with her husband Maceo Thomas. She danced in several films and stage productions, and was one of the "first American artists to be selected for the initial television broadcast in England." Early life and education Chilton was born in Chicago, the daughter of Newton T. Chilton and Lucille E. Bacon Chilton. Both parents were part of the Great Migration from the American South to Northern cities; her mother was a probation officer and her father was a carpenter. She trained as a dancer in Chicago. Career Chilton was performing as a dancer and singer in Chicago from her teens. She and Thomas began touring together as a "fancy dance act" by early 1927. They were often billed as "Creole dancers". Great Migration (African American)
The Great Migration, sometimes known as the Great Northward Migration or the Black Migration, was the movement of six million African Americans out of the rural Southern United States to the urban Northeast, Midwest, and West between 1910 and 1970. It was caused primarily by the poor economic conditions for African American people, as well as the prevalent racial segregation and discrimination in the Southern states where Jim Crow laws were upheld. In particular, continued lynchings motivated a portion of the migrants, as African Americans searched for social reprieve. ''Strike Me Pink'' is a 1936 American musical comedy film directed by Norman Taurog, starring Eddie Cantor and Ethel Merman, and produced by Samuel Goldwyn. Cantor plays a nebbishy employee of an amusement park, forced to assert himself against a gang of slot-machine racketeers. The climax involves a wild chase over a roller coaster and in a hot-air balloon, filmed at The Pike in Long Beach, California. The film's sets were designed by the art director Richard Day. Al Jolson (born Eizer Yoelson; June 9, 1886 – October 23, 1950) was a Lithuanian-American Jews, Jewish singer, comedian, actor, and vaudevillian. Idlewild, Michigan
Idlewild is an unincorporated community in Yates Township, located just east of Baldwin in southeast Lake County, a rural part of northwestern lower Michigan. During the first half of the 20th century, it was one of the few resorts in the country where African-Americans were allowed to vacation and purchase property, before discrimination was outlawed in 1964 through the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The surrounding area is within Manistee National Forest. The community encompasses Lake Idlewild, and the headwaters of the Pere Marquette River extends throughout the region.
