Carlos Fernandes (activist)
Carlos Anderson Henriques Fernandes (October 12, 1983 ''–'' February 26, 2024) was a prominent LGBT activist as well as the director and a founder of Associação Íris Angola ( Iris Angola Association), the first LGBT organization in the country. His work played a role in decriminalizing homosexuality in Angola and improving the country's LGBTI rights. Career and impact Fernandes' career before his time at Iris Angola is not widely documented. According to Fernandes' Instagram, he previously worked a variety of jobs such as advertising distribution in Portugal, construction assistance in Spain, and management of Bar Manda Fama in Luanda. Fenandes and Paula Sebastião, a fellow activist at Iris Angola, described coming up with the idea of an LGBT organization in 2013 while participating in PSI's PROACTIVO project. LGBT

Iris Angola Association
Iris Angola Association (Portuguese: Associação Íris Angola) is the first legally registered LGBTI non-governmental organization in Angola. The organization was founded in 2013 and became legally registered in 2018. Activities Iris Angola is a gay rights lobbying group. It provides support through human rights advocacy as well as the prevention, treatment and care for HIV. Director Carlos Fernandes participated in a Facebook live event with the U.S. embassy in 2021. With the support of the United Nations Development Program, Iris Angola launched a photo exhibition called "See Beyond Your Prejudice" in 2022. Iris Angola organized the first Miss Trans Angola pageant in 2024. That year, it also argued in for the inclusion on a sexual orientation questionnaire on the country's census. LGBT Rights In Angola
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) rights in Angola have seen improvements in the early half of the twenty-first century. In November 2020, the National Assembly approved a new penal code, which legalised consenting same-sex sexual activity. Additionally, employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation has been banned, making Angola one of the few African countries to have such protections for LGBT people. Some NGOs in Angola, that are involved in HIV/AIDS education, are beginning to work with the LGBT community, and there are no reports of LGBT people being specifically targeted for harassment in Angola by police or vigilante groups. UNAIDS
The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS) (, ONUSIDA) is the main advocate for accelerated, comprehensive and coordinated global action on the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The mission of UNAIDS is to lead, strengthen and support an expanded response to HIV and AIDS that includes preventing transmission of HIV, providing care and support to those already living with the virus, reducing the vulnerability of individuals and communities to HIV and alleviating the impact of the epidemic.
