Carlo Mannelli
Carlo Mannelli (4 November 1640 in Rome – 6 January 1697 in Rome) was an Italian violinist, castrato and composer. Life Mannelli spent the major part of his life in Rome where he also worked during the opera performances and religious events. As a violinist nicknamed ''Carlo del Violino'' and ''Carluccio di Pamfilio'', he played the first violin in the most famous Roman musical ensemble of the period. A castrato (Italian, plural: ''castrati'') is a type of classical male singing voice equivalent to that of a soprano, mezzo-soprano, or contralto. The voice is produced by castration of the singer before puberty, or it occurs in one who, due to an endocrinological condition, never reaches sexual maturity. Castration before puberty (or in its early stages) prevents the larynx from being transformed by the normal physiological events of puberty. As a result, the vocal range of prepubescence (shared by both sexes) is largely retained, and the voice develops into adulthood in a unique way. Prepubescent castration for this purpose diminished greatly in the late 18th century. Methods of castration used to terminate on the onset of puberty varied. Carlo Ambrogio Lonati
Carlo Ambrogio Lonati, baptized Giovanni Ambrogio Leinati, also Lunati; (c.1645 – c.1712) was an Italian composer, violinist and singer. Francesco Maria Veracini described him in 1760 as one of the most virtuoso violinists of his century. Life Nothing is known so far about the family and the musical education of Lonati, but he is thought to have been born in Milan. Between 1665 and 1667 he figured as a violinist in the viceroy's (Pedro Antonio de Aragón) chapel in Naples. Since 1673 he was in the service of Queen Christina of Sweden, and led her string orchestra, and from that time was also known as the "Queen's Hunchback" ('Il Gobbo della Regina'). He made friends with Alessandro Stradella, his companion in notoriety. Together with Carlo Mannelli and Lelio Colista he counted among the "più valorosi professori musici di Roma". Lelio Colista (13 January 1629, Rome – 13 October 1680, Rome) was an Italian Baroque composer, lutenist, and guitarist.Michael Tilmouth, entry on Lelio Colista in New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, 1980 Funded by his father, who held an important position in the Vatican Library, Colista early received an excellent musical education, probably at the ''Seminario Romano''. He mastered several instruments, especially the lute, guitar, and theorbo. Already at the age of 30, he held a lucrative post of ''custode delle pittore'' at the papal chapel. In the decade that followed (the 1660s) he was ''maestro di cappella'' at the titular church in Rome San Marcello al Corso; two oratorios he wrote for San Marcello in 1661 and 1667 are now lost.
