Matthew Carle (born September 25, 1984) is an American former professional ice hockey defenseman. Carle played in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the San Jose Sharks, Tampa Bay Lightning, Philadelphia Flyers and Nashville Predators. He was originally drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the second round, 47th overall, in 2003. Prior to turning professional, Carle played for the University of Denver where he was named NCAA Defenseman of the Year, NCAA All-American Team (West), First All-WCHA Team, USCHO First Team All American, and First Team All American. His picture book ''The Very Hungry Caterpillar'', first published in 1969, has been translated into more than 66 languages and sold more than 50 million copies. Frankie Carle (born Francis Nunzio Carlone, March 25, 1903 – March 7, 2001) was an American pianist and bandleader. As a very popular bandleader in the 1940s and 1950s, Carle was nicknamed "The Wizard of the Keyboard". "Sunrise Serenade" was Carle's best-known composition, rising to No. 1 in the US in 1938 and selling more than one million copies. Early life Carle was born in Providence, Rhode Island, on March 25, 1903. Born the son of a factory worker who could not afford a piano, he practiced on a dummy keyboard devised by his uncle, pianist Nicholas Colangelo, until he found a broken-down instrument in a dance hall. David Carle (born November 9, 1989) is an American ice hockey coach who is currently in charge of the program at Denver. Career Hailing from Alaska, Carle attended high school at Shattuck-Saint Mary's in Faribault, Minnesota. After his career at Shattuck, Carle was projected to be a second-round pick in the 2008 NHL entry draft. While preparing for the 2008 NHL Entry Draft an abnormality was detected during the NHL combine and after undergoing tests at the Mayo Clinic Carle was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, an enlargement of a heart muscle. While the genetic abnormality is not immediately life-threatening, it has been shown to be a leading cause of sudden death in athletes.
