Carel Anthonie van Wankum (22 April 1896 – 20 October 1961) was a Dutch rower. Overschie
Overschie is a neighborhood of Rotterdam, Netherlands, formerly a separate village with its own municipality. The village of Overschie was located on the intersection of four rivers called "Schie": the Delftsche Schie, Schiedamsche Schie, Delfshavensche Schie, and Rotterdamsche Schie. It was a separate municipality between 1817 and 1941, when it merged with Rotterdam. Immediately after the Second World War, the construction of a large suburb was begun southeast of the village. European Rowing Championships
The European Rowing Championships is an international Rowing regatta organised by FISA (the International Rowing Federation) for European rowing nations, plus Israel which, though not a member of the European federation is treated as a European nation for competition purposes. The championships date back to 1893, the year after FISA was founded. Over time, the competition grew in status and as it was not restricted to European countries, became regarded as the quasi-world championships. The World Rowing Championships were commenced in 1962 and the last European Championships were held in 1973 as from 1974, the World Championships became an annual event. The European Championships were re-introduced in 2007 but with a narrower focus on Europe. The 1925 European Rowing Championships were rowing championships held on the Vltava (Moldau) in the Czechoslovakian capital Prague on 3 and 4 September. The competition was for men only and they competed in all seven Olympic boat classes (M1x, M2x, M2-, M2+, M4-, M4+, M8+) as they had been rowed at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris. The 1926 European Rowing Championships were rowing championships held on Lake Lucerne in the Swiss city of Lucerne. The competition was for men only and they competed in all seven Olympic boat classes (M1x, M2x, M2-, M2+, M4-, M4+, M8+). Competition The regatta was held on Lake Lucerne; the 1908 European Rowing Championships had also been held there. From 1933 onwards, the nearby Rotsee was used for regattas instead. Hein Van Suylekom
Hendrik Christiaan "Hein" van Suylekom (17 March 1904 – 11 December 1982) was a Dutch rower. Together with Carel van Wankum he won three bronze medals at the European championships of 1925–1927. Rowing is the act of propelling a human-powered watercraft using the sweeping motions of oars to displace water and generate reactional propulsion. Rowing is functionally similar to paddling, but rowing requires oars to be mechanically attached to the boat, and the rower drives the oar like a lever, exerting force in the ''same'' direction as the boat's travel; while paddles are completely hand-held and have no attachment to the boat, and are driven like a cantilever, exerting force ''opposite'' to the intended direction of the boat.
