Cape Hawaii
Cape Hawaii (russian: Мыс Гавайи) is a headland of Wrangel Island. Administratively it belongs to the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, Russian Federation. This cape is located on the southeastern coast of Wrangel Island, facing the Chukchi Sea, about east of Rodgers Harbor. History Cape Hawaii was named in August 1867 by Thomas Long, the captain of American whaling bark ''Nile'', after the Hawaiian Islands, where his ship was based. On 23 August 1881 the headland was the first point of Wrangel Island sighted by Lieutenant Robert M. Berry on USS Rodgers during the search for the ''Jeannette''. In the 1960s, a radar station of the Soviet Air Defence Forces was built on Cape Hawaii. The military personnel lived in it autonomously with supplies delivered by air. They rarely visited neighboring Ushakovskoye village, and only following an invitation of local authorities or in connection with significant events. Wrangel Island
Wrangel Island ( rus, О́стров Вра́нгеля, r=Ostrov Vrangelya, p=ˈostrəf ˈvrangʲɪlʲə; ckt, Умӄиԓир, translit=Umqiḷir) is an island of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, Russia. It is the 91st largest island in the world and roughly the size of Crete. Located in the Arctic Ocean between the Chukchi Sea and East Siberian Sea, the island lies astride the 180th meridian. The International Date Line is therefore displaced eastwards at this latitude to avoid the island as well as the Chukchi Peninsula on the Russian mainland, to keep the island on the same day as the rest of Russia. Waring Point
Waring Point (russian: Мыс Уэринг) is a headland of the Chukchi Sea. Administratively, it belongs to the Chukotka, Russian Federation. It is the easternmost point of Wrangel Island. This headland was named in 1881 after Lieutenant Waring of USS Rodgers, commanded by Lieutenant Robert M. Berry. Lt. Waring was the first to land at this point. A number of governments maintain permanent research stations in the Arctic. Also known as Arctic bases, polar stations or ice stations, these bases are widely distributed across the northern polar region of Earth. Historically few research stations have been permanent. Most of them were temporary, being abandoned after the completion of the project or owing to lack of funding to continue the research. Some of these were military or intelligence stations (listening posts) created as a result of the proximity of the U.S. and Soviet Union to each other's landmass across the polar region. Ushakovskoye, Chukotka Autonomous Okrug
Ushakovskoye (russian: Ушаковское) was a rural locality (a '' selo'') on the south east coast of Wrangel Island, Shmidtovsky District in the Russian Arctic that was deserted in 2003. Ushakovskoye was named after the explorer and founder of the polar station in Rogers Bay, Georgy Ushakov, who discovered a number of new islands in the Russian arctic. The settlement was founded as part of an attempt by Russia to assert sovereignty over the island following attempts by British and Canadian parties to claim the island and in 1935 was the scene of a grisly murder committed by the local Governor. The whole area experiences a severe, almost year-round arctic climate, with temperatures rarely above freezing. The Soviet Air Defence Forces (russian: войска ПВО, ''voyska protivovozdushnoy oborony'', ''voyska PVO'', ''V-PVO'', lit. Radar is a detection system that uses radio waves to determine the distance (''ranging''), angle, and radial velocity of objects relative to the site. It can be used to detect aircraft, ships, spacecraft, guided missiles, motor vehicles, weather formations, and terrain. A radar system consists of a transmitter producing electromagnetic waves in the radio or microwaves domain, a transmitting antenna, a receiving antenna (often the same antenna is used for transmitting and receiving) and a receiver and processor to determine properties of the objects. Raymond Lee Newcomb
Raymond Lee Newcomb (December 31, 1849 – June 28, 1918) was an American naturalist, taxidermist, artist, and astronomer from Salem, Massachusetts. He was part of the ''Jeannette'' expedition and edited and co-authored ''Our Lost Explorers: the narrative of the Jeannette Arctic expedition as related by the survivors''. The book incorporated material from his journal accounts of the expedition. He was to produce studies and bring home specimens from the ill-fated Arctic expedition. Biography He and the other survivors were welcomed back to the United States after their Arctic expedition. In 1882, he gave a presentation to the Essex Institute. In 1883, he was scheduled to give a lecture on the expedition at Wellesley College with stereopticon images for illustration. USS ''Rodgers'' was an American 420-ton steam whaler. Launched in 1879 as ''Mary and Helen'', she was acquired by the United States Navy after Congress—besieged by constituents as well as government agencies—appropriated $175,000 "to enable the Secretary of the Navy to charter, or purchase, equip, and supply a vessel for the prosecution of a search for the and such other vessels as might be found to need assistance during said cruise; provided that the vessel be wholly manned by volunteers from the Navy." Chukchi Sea
Chukchi Sea ( rus, Чуко́тское мо́ре, r=Chukotskoye more, p=tɕʊˈkotskəjə ˈmorʲɪ), sometimes referred to as the Chuuk Sea, Chukotsk Sea or the Sea of Chukotsk, is a marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean. It is bounded on the west by the Long Strait, off Wrangel Island, and in the east by Point Barrow, Alaska, beyond which lies the Beaufort Sea. The Bering Strait forms its southernmost limit and connects it to the Bering Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The principal port on the Chukchi Sea is Uelen in Russia.
