Cao Haibo
Cao Haibo (born on 23 April 1985), is a Chinese dissident who sentenced to eight years in prison for attempting to found an opposition political party in the People's Republic of China, named the China Republican Party. A court in Kunming, Yunnan province, sentenced him to eight years in prison for "subversion of state power" (a more serious charge than inciting subversion of state power, which he had originally been charged with) in trying to form a party and for online messages criticising the ruling Chinese Communist party. His lawyer, Ma Xiaopeng, announced plans to appeal the conviction and sentences. With a reduction of 13 months from his sentence Cao was released from jail on 20 September 2018. Chinese Human Rights Defenders
China Human Rights Defenders (CHRD) is a non-government organization of domestic and overseas China, Chinese human rights activists and groups. The organization is headquartered in Washington DC. Its objective is to provide assistance to both human rights activists and victims of rights abuses, as well as to monitor developments in human rights and rule of law. CHRD supplies grants to Chinese human rights activists, as well as legal training and assistance. The group issues statements on human rights issues and its website provides news and background information. On 26 October 2022, the CHRD said of executives going to the Global Financial Leaders' Investment Summit that it "calls on these financial leaders to bring up the deteriorating human rights situation in Hong Kong as a matter of the utmost urgency." Dissident
A dissident is a person who actively challenges an established Political system, political or Organized religion, religious system, doctrine, belief, policy, or institution. Kunming
Kunming (; ), also known as Yunnan-Fu, is the capital and largest city of Yunnan province, China. It is the political, economic, communications and cultural centre of the province as well as the seat of the provincial government. The headquarters of many of Yunnan's large businesses are in Kunming. It was important during World War II as a Chinese military center, American air base, and transport terminus for the Burma Road.
