Cantiere Navale Di Palermo
''Cantiere navale di Palermo'' (Palermo Shipyard) is a shipyard in Palermo, Sicily. The premise falls within the Port of Palermo area. The Port Authority agreed a State concession to Fincantieri expiring 2057. The shipyard has two graving docks (respectively by 400,000 dwt and 20,000 dwt) and one new building shipway. History It was founded in 1897 by Ignazio Florio Jr., grandson of Vincenzo Florio Sr. Construction was protracted and Florio was forced to sell his stake in the shipyard to Attilio Odero in 1905. It was then amalgamated with the two shipyards belonging to Officine e Cantieri Liguri-Anconetani into Cantieri Navali Riuniti (CNR) on 31 January 1906. In 1925 CNR was renamed as Cantieri Navali del Tirreno after it gained control of the Cantiere navale di Riva Trigoso. Grande America
''Grande America'' was a roll-on/roll-off cargo ship built by Fincantieri in 1997, owned and operated by Grimaldi Lines, a subsidiary of Grimaldi Group. It sank in the Bay of Biscay in March 2019. Sinking On 10 March 2019, ''Grande America'' caught fire while traveling the Atlantic Ocean between France and Spain on its route from Hamburg (Germany) to Casablanca (Morocco), and sank into the Bay of Biscay on 12 March. The 27 people on board were rescued by the Royal Navy ship after they abandoned ship on 11 March. After their lifeboat's engine broke down entering the water, a Royal Navy sea boat towed it to safety in a swell. Leading Seaman David Groves, the sea boat coxswain, was later awarded the Queen's Gallantry Medal for his bravery in the rescue. ''Avrasya'' is a Ro-Ro ferry that was hijacked in the Black Sea hostage crisis of 1996. Originally built in 1953 as the passenger ship ''Lazio'', she was converted to a Ro-Ro ferry in 1967.
