Canonsburg Armory
The Canonsburg Armory is a former Pennsylvania National Guard armory in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 22, 1989. It is designated as a historic public landmark by the Washington County History & Landmarks Foundation. History The armory was built in 1938 at a cost of $85,548, funded by the Public Works Administration. In 2010, the armory was sold to the Borough of Canonsburg for $268,000. Canonsburg, Pennsylvania
Canonsburg is a Borough (Pennsylvania), borough in Washington County, Pennsylvania, southwest of Pittsburgh. Canonsburg was laid out by Colonel John Canon in 1789 and incorporated in 1802. The population was 9,735 at the 2020 census. The town lies in a rich coal district, and most of the town's work force once worked in local steel mills or coal mining, coal mines. Interstate 79 and U.S. Route 19 (Pennsylvania), U.S. Route 19 pass through the town, as does the Pittsburgh and Ohio Central Railroad. A tram, trolley used to operate from Washington, Pennsylvania to Pittsburgh through the borough until 1953. The town is home to Sarris Candies and All-Clad Metalcrafters, makers of cookware and other bonded metals. Colonial Revival Architecture
The Colonial Revival architectural style seeks to revive elements of American colonial architecture. The beginnings of the Colonial Revival style are often attributed to the Centennial Exhibition of 1876, which reawakened Americans to the architectural traditions of their colonial past. Fairly small numbers of Colonial Revival homes were built c. 1880–1910, a period when Queen Anne-style architecture was dominant in the United States. From 1910–1930, the Colonial Revival movement was ascendant, with about 40% of U.S. homes built during this period in the Colonial Revival style. Washington County History & Landmarks Foundation is a Non-profit organization, non-profit educational institution in Washington, Pennsylvania. Its purpose is to encourage and assist the preservation of historic structures in Washington County, Pennsylvania. The Public Works Administration (PWA), part of the New Deal of 1933, was a large-scale public works construction agency in the United States headed by Secretary of the Interior Harold L. Ickes. It was created by the National Industrial Recovery Act in June 1933 in response to the Great Depression. It built large-scale public works such as dams, bridges, hospitals, and schools. Its goals were to spend $3.3 billion (about $10 per person in the U.S.) in the first year, and $6 billion (about $18 dollars per person in the U.S.) in all, to supply employment, stabilize buying power, and help revive the economy.
