The extended Cannon family has had strong regional and national political influence in Canada. The family originated in Ireland and moved to Quebec in the 18th century. Lawrence John Cannon
Lawrence John Cannon (November 18, 1852 – January 30, 1921) was a Canadian lawyer and judge. Born in Quebec City, Canada East, the son of Lawrence Ambrose Cannon and Mary Jane Cary, his godfather was Augustin-Norbert Morin. Cannon studied at the Séminaire de Québec and the Séminaire de Nicolet before receiving a law degree from the Université Laval. He was called to the Quebec Bar in 1874 and practiced law in Arthabaskaville (Victoriaville) in partnership with Édouard-Louis Pacaud. In 1882, he ran unsuccessfully as the Liberal candidate for the House of Commons of Canada in the riding of Drummond—Arthabaska losing to Désiré Olivier Bourbeau Désiré Olivier Bourbeau (21 September 1834 – 21 December 1900) was a Canadian politician and merchant. Lawrence Arthur Dumoulin Cannon
Lawrence Arthur Dumoulin Cannon (April 28, 1877 – December 25, 1939) was a Canadian lawyer, politician, and Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. Born in Arthabaska, Quebec, the son of Lawrence John Cannon and Aurélie Dumoulin, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1896 from Université Laval. In 1899 he received an LL.L also from Université Laval. He was called to the Bar in 1899 and practised law. His brother was Lucien Cannon, a politician and cabinet minister. In 1908, he was elected to the City council of Quebec City. In 1916, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec for the riding of Québec-Centre as a Liberal. He was re-elected in 1919 but was defeated in 1923. He returned to private practice until he was appointed to the Court of King's Bench of Quebec in 1927. Lucien Cannon
Lucien Cannon, (January 16, 1887 – February 14, 1950) was a Canadian lawyer and politician. Born in Arthabaska, Quebec, the son of Lawrence John Cannon and Aurélie Dumoulin, he studied law at the Laval University and was called to the Quebec Bar in 1910. His brother was Lawrence Arthur Dumoulin Cannon, a puisne judge of the Supreme Court of Canada. His nephew, Charles-Arthur Dumoulin Cannon, and grandson, Lawrence Cannon, were also MPs. In 1911 federal election, he ran as a Liberal candidate for the House of Commons of Canada in the riding of Charlevoix losing to Joseph David Rodolphe Forget. In a 1913 by-election, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec in the riding of Dorchester. A Liberal, he was re-elected in 1916. He resigned in 1917 to run again for the Canadian House of Commons in the riding of Dorchester in a by-election. He was defeated, but was elected in the 1917 federal election. Charles-Arthur Dumoulin Cannon
Charles-Arthur Dumoulin Cannon (11 September 1905 – 23 September 1976) was a Liberal party member of the House of Commons of Canada. He was a lawyer by career. He was first elected at the Îles-de-la-Madeleine riding in the 1949 general election. Cannon was re-elected for successive terms there in 1953 and 1957. After completing his final term, the 23rd Canadian Parliament, Cannon was defeated by James Russell Keays of the Progressive Conservative party. Lawrence Cannon
Lawrence Cannon, (born December 6, 1947) is a Canadian politician from Quebec and Prime Minister Stephen Harper's former Quebec lieutenant. In early 2006, he was made the Minister of Transport. On October 30, 2008, he relinquished oversight of Transport and was sworn in as Minister of Foreign Affairs. He was defeated in the 2011 federal election by the NDP's Mathieu Ravignat. He was appointed as Canadian Ambassador to France in May 2012, and he served in that position until September 2017.
