Canniesburn Hospital
Canniesburn Hospital was a health facility on Switchback Road in Bearsden, East Dunbartonshire, Scotland. The original hospital blocks constitute a Grade B listed building. History The facility, which was designed in 1936 by George James Miller (1902-1940) the "son" of James Miller & Son, was established as an auxiliary hospital for the Glasgow Royal Infirmary in 1938. The hospital joined the National Health Service The National Health Service (NHS) is the umbrella term for the publicly funded healthcare systems of the United Kingdom (UK). Since 1948, they have been funded out of general taxation. Bearsden
Bearsden () is a town in East Dunbartonshire, Scotland, on the northwestern fringe of Greater Glasgow. Approximately from Glasgow city centre, Glasgow City Centre, the town is effectively a suburb, and its housing development coincided with the 1863 introduction of a railway line. The town was named after Bearsden railway station, which was named after a nearby cottage. Bearsden was ranked the seventh-wealthiest area in Britain in a 2005 survey, and has the least social housing of any town in Scotland. The Roman Empire, Roman Antonine Wall runs through the town, and the remains of a military thermae, bath house can be seen near the town centre. In 1649, the first New Kilpatrick parish church was built, which became the centre of administration for the area. East Dunbartonshire ( sco, Aest Dunbartanshire; gd, Siorrachd Dhùn Bhreatainn an Ear) is one of the 32 council areas of Scotland. It borders the north of Glasgow and contains many of the affluent areas to the north of the city, including Bearsden, Milngavie, Milton Of Campsie, Balmore and Torrance, as well as many of the city's commuter towns and villages. George James Miller
George James Miller (1902–1940) was a Scottish architect, specialising in hospitals. Life He was born in Glasgow in 1902 the son of James Miller, architect, and his wife Emilina Henrietta Crichton.Glasgow Post Office Directory 1902 Miller was sent to boarding school in Edinburgh, being educated at Fettes College. He then studied art and architecture at St John's College, Cambridge. Returning to Glasgow around 1924 he was apprenticed in his father's office at 15 Blythswood Square and did further studies at the Royal Technical College in Glasgow. Around 1932 he obtained a post as an assistant architect in the office of Sir Herbert Baker in South Africa. In 1936 he returned to Glasgow to allow his father to step down and the company was renamed James Miller & Son. He died on 14 May 1940 after a brief illness, at which point his father wound up the practice. He was buried in Hillfoot Cemetery in Bearsden, Glasgow. James Miller (1860–1947) was a Scottish architect, recognised for his commercial architecture in Glasgow and for his Scottish railway stations. Notable among these are the American-influenced Union Bank building at 110–20 St Vincent Street; his 1901–1905 extensions to Glasgow Central railway station;Paton (2006) "Design worthy of the city". The Glasgow Royal Infirmary (GRI) is a large teaching hospital. With a capacity of around 1,000 beds, the hospital campus covers an area of around , and straddles the Townhead and Dennistoun districts on the north-eastern fringe of the city centre of Glasgow, Scotland.
