Cannabis is illegal in Kenya. History Locally referred to as ''bhang'', ''banghi'', or ''bangi'', cannabis was banned in Kenya during the British colonial East Africa Protectorate under the Opium Ordinance, effective 1 January 1914. However, there have been recent campaigns that have called for its legalization. For instance, former member of parliament for Kibra Constituency Ken Okoth advocated for its legalization on the basis of its medicinal values. In March 2019, the New York–based company GoIP Global Inc announced that it had obtained a license to grow cannabis, although their claim was denied by the Kenyan government. East Africa Protectorate
East Africa Protectorate (also known as British East Africa) was an area in the African Great Lakes occupying roughly the same terrain as present-day Kenya from the Indian Ocean inland to the border with Uganda in the west. Kibra Constituency
Kibra Constituency is an electoral constituency in Nairobi, one of 17 constituencies in the county, and has an area of 12.1 km². It is located to the southwest of the City of Nairobi, and includes most of the Kibera slum and adjoining estates. The constituency was created prior to the 2013 general election. ''Kibra'' is a Nubian word meaning 'forest' or 'jungle'. The Nubians have lived in what is now Kibra since the end of the Second World War, when they were allocated land by the British colonial government.
