Canela, Rio Grande Do Sul
Canela (), meaning ''Cinnamon'' in Portuguese, is a town located in the Serra Gaúcha of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Both Canela and neighboring Gramado are important tourist locations and they both draw many visitors each year. Ecotourism is very popular in the area and there are many opportunities for hiking, rock climbing, horseback riding and river rafting. Tourism The main tourist attraction in Canela is the Parque do Caracol, the Cathedral of Stone, and Caracol Falls (Cascata do Caracol). Like sister town Gramado, Canela is a large tourist draw during the winter, where snowfall can occur, and during the Christmas holiday and the local town council deck Canela with lights and other festive decorations. Canela is one of four communes in the Choapa Province of Chile's north-central IV Coquimbo Region. The capital is the town of Canela Baja. Administration As a commune, Canela is administered by a municipal council, headed by a directly elected alcalde. The municipal building (''alcaldía'') is located at Luis Infante Nº 520 in Canela Baja. La Canela, the Valley of Cinnamon, is a legendary location in South America. As with El Dorado, its legend grew out of expectations aroused by the voyage of Christopher Columbus. He had demonstrated to the satisfaction of his backers that gold and spices would be found as a result of his Atlantic crossing; since he himself found little of these commodities, the search on the American mainland continued. In 1541, Gonzalo Pizarro led an expedition east of Quito with Francisco de Orellana in search of ''The country of cinnamon'' ("País de la Canela"). Isla Canela is a small island located south of the town of Ayamonte, in Andalusia, Spain, in Province of Huelva. The mouth of the Guadiana River is next to the island, and Portugal (across the river) can be easily seen from Isla Canela.
