Candy Raisins
Candy Raisins are a soft jujube candy popular in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States. The candy was produced from the 1930s until 2008, discontinued, then revived in 2014. Description Though named "raisin", the name is for the appearance of their wrinkled tops, while the flavor has been compared to: "honey, ginger, lilac, perfume, soap." History The candy dates back to the 1930s, when two Milwaukee companies and one San Francisco company were producing them. In 1939, Stark Candy of Milwaukee acquired one of the companies, patented the recipe in 1976, and produced the candy until 2008. Stark was purchased by Necco in 1988, and continued to produce the candy at the Wisconsin plant until its closing in 2008. In 2014, Delafield entrepreneur John Barker re-introduced Candy Raisins, having invested over $1,000,000 into his Lake Country Candies company and acquiring the rights to the name and recipe from Necco. Jujube ( or ; also known as jube or juju) is a Gummy candy, gummy type of candy drop. History A recipe for "pate de jujubes" was published in 1709. The recipe called for gum arabic, sugar, and the date-like jujube fruit. In 1853, both "ju ju paste" and "ju ju drops" were sold by confectioners. Later, recipes used various flavorings instead of jujube fruits. The Stark Candy Company, originally the Howard B. Stark Company, was a candy manufacturer founded in 1939, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It was a competitor to Necco and manufactured products including candy hearts, candy raisins, Mary Janes, peanut butter kisses, salt water taffy, and candy cigarettes Candy cigarettes are a candy introduced in the late 19th century made out of chalky sugar, bubblegum or chocolate, wrapped in paper and packaged and branded so as to resemble cigarettes. Necco (or NECCO ) was an American manufacturer of candy created in 1901 as the New England Confectionery Company through the merger of several small confectionery companies located in the Greater Boston area, with ancestral companies dating back to the 1840s. In May 2018, Necco was sold for $17.33 million to Round Hill Investments LLC, run by billionaire C. Delafield, Wisconsin
Delafield is a city in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, along the Bark River. The population was 7,085 at the 2010 census. The city of Delafield is a separate municipality from the Town of Delafield, both of which are situated in township 7 North Range 18 East. History Delafield was established in 1837, named after Dr. Charles Delafield of Milwaukee. It was the hometown of the Cushing brothers, who served the Union cause during the American Civil War—Alonzo (killed during Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg), William (led the raid on ), and Howard (an Indian fighter killed fighting the Apache in Arizona after the war).
