The 1938 Queensland state election, 1938 state election in Queensland, Australia was held on 2 April 1938. Since the previous election, the Country and Progressive National Party (CPNP) had split into the state branches of the United Australia Party – Queensland, United Australia Party and the National Party of Australia – Queensland, Country Party. Seats won by the CPNP in 1935 are listed as held by whichever successor party the MP joined. 1938 Queensland State Election
Elections were held in the Australian state of Queensland on 2 April 1938 to elect the 62 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. The Labor government of Premier William Forgan Smith was seeking a third term in office. During the previous term, the Country and United Australia parties had emerged from the united Country and Progressive National Party, which had represented conservative forces for over a decade. The most notable feature of the election campaign was the Protestant Labor Party, established in 1937, which claimed that the Forgan Smith Ministry was disproportionately Catholic and made extravagant claims that three-quarters of all police and public servants in the State were Catholic. Despite the campaign, Labor only lost one seat, Kelvin Grove, to the party. Ernest Riordan
Ernest Joseph "Dick" Riordan (21 September 1901 – 9 December 1954) was a Miner, Wharf labourer, and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early years Riordan was born at Mareeba, Queensland, to parents William Riordan and his wife Mary (née Walsh) and was educated at state schools in both Chillagoe and Cairns. When he left school he worked as a meatworker, miner, cane-cutter, and navy. He spent about eight years working on the wharves in Bowen, ending up as secretary of the Waterside Workers' Federation. Political career Riordan first entered politics as an alderman on the Town of Bowen council. In March 1936, the member for the state seat of Bowen, Charles Collins, died and a by-election was held on the 20 June of that year. Riordan was nominated as the Labor Party candidate and went on to win the seat over John Smith of the Country Party. Toowong was an Queensland Legislative Assembly electoral districts, electoral district of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland, Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1888 to 1992. It was centred on the Northern Brisbane, Queensland, Brisbane suburb of Toowong, Queensland, Toowong. Redistributions over the years extended Toowong toward Mount Coot-tha, Queensland, Mt Coot-tha and Moggill, Queensland, Moggill, and it shrank back toward the populated areas when Electoral district of Mount Coot-tha, Mt Coot-tha was given its own district. James Francis Maxwell
James Francis Maxwell was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was the mayor of the City of Brisbane and a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly for Toowong. Early life James Francis Maxwell was born in 1862 in County Armagh, Ireland, the son of Samuel Maxwell and his wife Matilda (née Stoops). On 23 July 1890 he married Alice Annie Letitia Davies at St Peter's Church at West End, Brisbane, the daughter of John Davies, the engineer and manager at the South Brisbane Gas Company who designed the (now heritage-listed) West End Gasworks. Politics Maxwell was a member of the Toombul Shire Council and its chairman in 1904 and 1905. Maxwell was the mayor of the City of Brisbane from 1920 to 1921. The electoral district of Stanley was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Queensland. History Stanley was created by the ''Electoral Districts Act'' of 1872 as a single-member seat (taking effect from 1873). From 1878 it became a two-member constituency through incorporation of part of the Electoral district of West Moreton from which it had been derived in 1872. Bulimba is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. The electorate covers the inner eastern suburbs of Brisbane. It is bounded on the north and the west by the Brisbane River and, as at the 2009 election, covers the suburbs of Bulimba, Balmoral, Cannon Hill, Hawthorne, Morningside, Norman Park, Murarrie and Seven Hills. The boundaries have changed relatively little since 1923; prior to that, the boundaries extended as far east as Wynnum and as far south-east as Mount Gravatt and Cleveland. James (Stoppy) Stopford (22 July 187830 November 1936) was an Australian miner, union organiser and Labor politician from Mount Morgan, Queensland. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly for Mount Morgan from 1915 until 1932, and then Maryborough until his death in 1936. Early life James Stopford was born on 22 July 1878 in Rockhampton, the son of John Joshua Stopford and his wife Elizabeth (née Wilson). His family moved to Mount Morgan when he was two years old. He attended Mount Morgan State School. James Stopford commenced his working life as a miner and engine driver at the Mount Morgan Mine. He was an active member of the Labor Party and the Australian Workers Union and was dismissed by the company for his union activity.
