Canadian Hip Hop
The Canadian hip hop scene was established in the 1980s. Through a variety of factors, it developed much slower than Canada's popular rock music scene, and apart from a short-lived burst of mainstream popularity from 1989 to 1991, it remained largely an underground phenomenon until the early 2000s. Dream Warriors (band)
Dream Warriors were a Canadian hip hop duo from Toronto, Ontario, comprising King Lou and Capital Q. Described as "a pair of deft, intelligent rappers" by John Bush of AllMusic, they were major contributors to the jazz rap movement of the early 1990s. Their 1991 debut album, ''And Now the Legacy Begins'', was cited by Bush as one of the finest alternative hip hop records of the golden era. In the music industry, the Top 40 is the current, 40 most-popular songs in a particular genre. It is the best-selling or most frequently broadcast popular music. Record charts have traditionally consisted of a total of 40 songs. "Top 40" or " contemporary hit radio" is also a radio format. "Let Your Backbone Slide" is the debut single by Maestro Fresh-Wes, released in 1989 from his first album, '' Symphony in Effect''. In Canada, over 50,000 copies of the single were sold, making Maestro the first Canadian rapper to have a gold single. It also reached #1 on '' The Record'' Singles Chart, in April 1990. In the United States, 25,000 copies were sold in its first few weeks of release. It remained the best-selling Canadian hip hop single of all time until 2008, when it was eclipsed by Kardinal Offishall's "Dangerous". Devon Martin, better known as Devon, is a Canadian rapper who rose to prominence in 1990 for his song titled "Mr. Metro", a controversial single about police racism. "Mr. Metro" subsequently became an alias of the artist. Biography and early career Devon was born in England, but raised in the Mississauga suburb of Malton, Ontario. He formed his first band, Shock Waves, at the age of 14, releasing an independent single in 1977. Ron Nelson (DJ)
Ron Nelson (born 1962) is a Toronto-based DJ, broadcaster, music promoter, producer and educator best known for his role in popularizing both hip hop music and later dancehall and reggae music in Canada. He helped promote and develop early Canadian hip hop acts such as Maestro Fresh Wes, Michie Mee, Rumble & Strong and the Dream Warriors. Nelson was born in Pembroke Hall, Jamaica and emigrated to Canada in 1972. Known as the "godfather of Toronto hip hop", Nelson created Canada's first hip hop radio show, ''Fantastic Voyage'', on CKLN-FM in 1983. CKLN-FM was a community radio station based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. From 1983 to 2011, CKLN Radio Inc. was licensed by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission as a campus-community FM radio station affiliated with Ryerson University, and broadcast at 88.1 MHz on the FM dial with the call sign CKLN-FM. Demetrius (Demo) Cates is an American-Canadian musician. He is most noted as a two-time Juno Award nominee for R&B/Soul Recording of the Year, receiving nominations at the Juno Awards of 1985 for "Memories of Moments" and at the Juno Awards of 1989 for "Secret Love". Cates began his musical career in Detroit, Michigan as a member of the soul/funk band The Fabulous Counts. 1979 Mississauga Train Derailment
The Mississauga train derailment occurred on November 10, 1979, in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, when a CP Rail freight train carrying hazardous chemicals derailed and caught fire. More than 200,000 people were evacuated in the largest peacetime evacuation in North America until Hurricane Katrina. The fire was caused by a failure of the lubricating system.
