CKLN-FM
CKLN-FM was a community radio station based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. From 1983 to 2011, CKLN Radio Inc. was licensed by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission as a campus-community FM radio station affiliated with Ryerson University, and broadcast at 88.1 MHz on the FM dial with the call sign CKLN-FM. It ceased FM broadcasting on April 15, 2011, after its licence was revoked on January 28, 2011 and continued as an internet radio outlet until it ceased operations on December 26, 2011. In its final months, most of the internet broadcaster's programs were produced in the Regent Park neighbourhood of Toronto. After CKLN was officially dissolved as an organization, its remaining resources and volunteers were transferred to Regent Park Focus Youth Media Arts Centre, which launched Radio Regent, a new Internet radio operation, in early 2012. CJRU, branded as ''CJRU.ca'' and originally branded as ''The Scope at Ryerson'', is a low-powered AM campus and community radio station, owned and operated by Radio Ryerson Incorporated at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University), which was granted a broadcast license by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission on December 11, 2014. The station broadcasts on 1280 kHz with a signal strength of 99 watts as well as online. The station officially launched on the AM band on March 31, 2016, after several weeks of test transmissions. Ron Nelson (DJ)
Ron Nelson (born 1962) is a Toronto-based DJ, broadcaster, music promoter, producer and educator best known for his role in popularizing both hip hop music and later dancehall and reggae music in Canada. He helped promote and develop early Canadian hip hop acts such as Maestro Fresh Wes, Michie Mee, Rumble & Strong and the Dream Warriors. Nelson was born in Pembroke Hall, Jamaica and emigrated to Canada in 1972. Known as the "godfather of Toronto hip hop", Nelson created Canada's first hip hop radio show, ''Fantastic Voyage'', on CKLN-FM in 1983. The Saturday afternoon show, which ran until 1991, became popular among Toronto youth and was the first exposure many had to the genre and was one of the few broadcast outlets for hip hop in Canada during the 1980s.
