Canadian Northern Ontario Railway Federal Bridge
The Canadian Northern Ontario Railway Bridge is a railway plate girder bridge over the Rideau River from the Merivale area to the Mooney's Bay neighbourhood in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is owned today by the CNoR's successor Canadian National Railway, and amongst other services carries the Via Rail Toronto – Ottawa Corridor passenger trains. The official designation of the bridge is Mile 5.8, subdivision Beachburg. History The bridge is on the CN Beachburg Subdivision, was authorized by BRC order 13668 on 18 May 1911, and the plans were approved by order 14828 on 20 September 1911. It was inaugurated with the opening of the line from Hurdman Junction (between today's Hurdman Station (OC Transpo) and Ottawa Train Station) to Smiths Falls Smiths Falls is a town in Eastern Ontario, Canada, southwest of Ottawa. Rideau River
The Rideau River (french: Rivière Rideau) is a river in Eastern Ontario, Canada. The river flows north from Upper Rideau Lake and empties into the Ottawa River at the Rideau Falls in Ottawa, Ontario. Its length is . As explained in a writing by Samuel de Champlain in 1613, the river was given the name "Rideau" (curtain) because of the appearance of the Rideau Falls. The Anishinàbemowin name for the river is "Pasapkedjinawong", meaning "the river that passes between the rocks." The Rideau Canal, which allows travel from Ottawa to the city of Kingston, Ontario on Lake Ontario, was formed by joining the Rideau River with the Cataraqui River. Hurdman is a station on Ottawa's O-Train Confederation Line, and bus rapid transit (BRT) system, Ottawa Rapid Transit, transitway. CN Beachburg Subdivision
The Canadian National Railway's Beachburg Subdivision or "Beachburg Sub" for short, was part of the former Transcontinental Mainline. The Beachburg Sub connected Ottawa to Brent, Ontario. The line began operating in 1915 as part of Canadian Northern Railway, then in 1923 it became part of the Canadian National Railway. The route passed through a portion of Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario, where Achray was a station in the park with a passing track on the mainline. The final train through the park was an eastbound freight on November 24, 1995. Abandonment from Pembroke, west to Brent, went through and the rail was lifted at Pembroke west through the park and was completed by September 1997.
