Video Art
Video art is an art form which relies on using video technology as a visual and audio medium. Video art emerged during the late 1960s as new consumer video technology such as video tape recorders became available outside corporate broadcasting. Video art can take many forms: recordings that are broadcast; installations viewed in galleries or museums; works streamed online, distributed as video tapes, or DVDs; and performances which may incorporate one or more television sets, video monitors, and projections, displaying live or recorded images and sounds. Video art is named for the original analog video tape, which was the most commonly used recording technology in much of the form history into the 1990s. Vikky Alexander
Vikky Alexander (born in Victoria, British Columbia, in 1959) is a Canadian contemporary artist based in Vancouver, British Columbia. She has exhibited internationally since 1981 as a practitioner in the field of photo-conceptualism, and as an installation artist who uses photography, drawing, and collage. Her themes include the appropriated image, and the deceptions of nature and space. Her artworks include mirrors, photographic landscape murals, postcards, video and photography. Background Alexander was born in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada and is a graduate of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design from which she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1979. She is known for her large scale photo-mural installations and multimedia art that combine photography with sculptural objects. Kenojuak Ashevak
Kenojuak Ashevak, (Inuktitut: ᕿᓐᓄᐊᔪᐊᖅ ᐋᓯᕙᒃ, Qinnuajuaq Aasivak), (October 3, 1927 – January 8, 2013) is celebrated as a leading figure of modern Inuit art. Early life and family Kenojuak Ashevak was born in an igloo in an Inuit camp, Ikirasaq, at the southern coast of Baffin Island. Her father, Ushuakjuk, an Inuit hunter and fur trader, and her mother, Silaqqi, named Kenojuak after Silaqqi's deceased father. Roy Arden
Roy Arden (born 1957) is a Canadian artist, born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He also creates sculpture from found objects, oil paintings, graphite drawings and collage, and curates and writes on contemporary art. Career Arden graduated from Emily Carr College of Art and Design with a bachelor degree in Photography and Interdisciplinary Studies in 1982 and with an M.A. from the University of British Columbia in 1990. In the early part of his career, Arden made straightforward Cibachrome images of the contemporary urban scene which he called "Fragments", then made what he called "meta-photography", archival image diptychs. In the 1990s, he made colour photographs of what he termed the "landscape of economy" that depicted the city of Vancouver and its rapid growth. Robert Archambeau
Robert Archambeau (18 April 1933 — 25 April 2022) was a Canadian ceramic artist and potter. He also had an academic career in post-secondary art studies. Personal history Born in Toledo, Ohio, United States in 1933, he immigrated to Canada in 1968. He served four years in the U.S. Marines, before undergraduate Studies at Toledo University, the Toledo Museum of Art School and Bowling Green State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. He earned his Masters of Fine Arts degree from New York State College of Ceramics on the campus of Alfred University in 1964. In addition to his prominence in the field of ceramic art, he was known as an educator and an art collector. Louis Archambault
Louis Archambault (April 4, 1915 – January 27, 2003) was a Quebec sculptor and ceramicist, who was one of the members of the "new sculpture" movement in Canada that moved away from traditional methods towards abstraction. Career Born in Montreal, Quebec, he received his BA from the University of Montreal in 1936 and a diploma in ceramics from the École des Beaux Arts, Montreal in 1939, becoming an instructor in sculpture at the École in 1949. In 1952, he exhibited his work at the then Art Gallery of Toronto with Alfred Pellan. In 1953, he won a Canadian Government Fellowship to study in Paris and Venice. In 1956, works by Archambault along with those of Jack Shadbolt and Harold Town represented Canada at the Venice Biennale. He was commissioned in 1957 to make a ceramic wall for the Canadian pavilion at the Brussels International and Universal Exposition in 1958. Isa Paddy Aqiattusuk
Isa Paddy Aqiattusuk (1898–1954) (also known as Akeeaktashuk) was an Inuit artist. Early life He was born in the Inukjuak area of Quebec. Art career In 1953, he was a featured artist in an exhibition at London's Gimpel Fils gallery. His work is included in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and the Avataq Cultural Institute collection of Inuit art. Many of his sculptures depict hunters. Later life Frederica Knight described him as a "friendly, outgoing man, who was fairly unsuccessful as a hunter and trapper, but whose immense talent as a stone carver was immediately recognized." The 1999 book ''The Canadian Encyclopedia'' describes him as "a jolly, robust, and outgoing man with an astonishing talent for observing and keenly portraying humans, animals, and birds in stone and ivory." Danielle April (born July 1, 1949) is a Canadian artist working in the fields of painting, sculpture, photography, installation art, printmaking and drawing. April's work often explores time and memory. Life and work Danielle April was born on July 1, 1949 in Rivière-du-Loup, Quebec. April studied art at the École des beaux-arts de Québec, graduating in 1971, followed by earning a bachelor's degree in visual arts at the Université Laval in 1972. Elizabeth Angrnaqquaq
Elizabeth Angrnaqquaq (1916–2003) was an innovative Canadian Inuk textile artist active from the 1970s to early 2000s. Angnaqquaq's work explores textile creations while experimenting with non-traditional methods. Her style has been described as painterly for the way in which she fills the space between her figures and animals with embroidery. Early life Angrnaqquaq was born in 1916 in the Northwest Territories, Canada in a traditional nomadic camp. She and her younger siblings were raised by their father after their mother died young. She lived a traditional Inuit lifestyle until the early she and her family moved to Baker Lake, Northwest Territories (now in Nunavut) in the 1950s to avoid poverty and starvation. Her son Harold worked at the sewing center in the late 1960s. Kay Angliss
Katherine Margaret "Kay" Angliss (1923 – 2004) was a Canadian artist. She was born on a farm in Port Coquitlam and grew up in British Columbia. Angliss graduated from the Vancouver School of Art in 1946, continuing her studies at the Emma Lake Art School in Saskatchewan, the University of Calgary and the Alberta College of Art. She taught at the Alberta College of Art from 1965 to 1980. She also taught art classes for children at the Allied Arts Centre in Calgary from 1960 to 1974. In 1987, Angliss was appointed a Life Member of the Alberta Society of Artists. In 1994 she was a recipient of the Royal Canadian Academy's Trust Fund. Stephen Andrews (artist)
Stephen Andrews is a Canadian artist based in Toronto. Born in 1956 in Sarnia, Ontario, Andrews is known for using various media to explore matters such as memory and loss, and technology, and its representations. Art practice Using images sourced from newspapers, television, film and the internet, Andrews creates hand-crafted works in a range of mediums, including oil, latex, crayon, silkscreen and linoleum-cut printing, rubber stamps, and animation. A distinctive feature of Andrews’ art is his interest in creating the look of mechanical reproduction using different techniques.
