Camp Mirage
Camp Mirage is the codename for a former Canadian Forces forward logistics facility located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The facility was established in late-December 2001 and, though not officially acknowledged by the Canadian Forces, is considered an "open secret". According to CTV sources, the base was closed in November 2010. Location It was established in December 2001 to support Canadian Forces operations in southwest Asia, namely Afghanistan. The exact location of Camp Mirage and the nature of its mission(s) are not officially acknowledged by the Canadian Forces or the Government of Canada; however, it has been widely reported that the facility is located at Al Minhad Air Base, operated by the United Arab Emirates Air Force. Al Minhad Air Base
Al Minhad Air Base ( ar, قاعدة المنهاد الجوية, , also just Minhad Air Base) is a military installation in the United Arab Emirates. The base is located approximately south of Dubai and is operated by the United Arab Emirates Air Force. It is currently the headquarters of the Australian Defence Force's Joint Task Force 633 and supports Australian operations in the Middle East. Canadian Forces Casualties In Afghanistan
The number of Canadian Forces' fatalities resulting from Canadian military activities in Afghanistan is the largest for any single Canadian military mission since the Korean War between 1950 and 1953. A total of 159 Canadian Forces personnel have been killed in the war since 2002. Specifics The first casualties occurred in the Tarnak Farm incident, in which four Canadians were killed and eight seriously wounded when a United States warplane dropped a bomb on a training exercise in the belief that the Canadians were enemy soldiers. Canada Dry (Persian Gulf War)
Canada Dry was the nickname for two Canadian Forces bases in Doha, Qatar during the first Gulf War. The two bases, named Canada Dry One (10 km outside Doha) and Canada Dry Two, housed land and air elements (CF18 - Desert Cats). Canada Dry is the name of a brand of ginger ale that originated in Canada. Camp Julien
Camp Julien was the main base for the Canadian contingent of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Kabul, Afghanistan. The camp was named after Lance Corporal George Patrick Julien, a Canadian Army soldier who was awarded the Military Medal as a Private, for his actions at Hill 187 in Korea in May 1953. LCpl Julien was a member of 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment, which was the first unit to occupy Camp Julien. Camp Julien was ready for full-scale occupancy in the late summer of 2003 with the arrival of Roto 0. At its height the camp housed 2,000 Canadian soldiers and over 400 civilian workers, approximately half of whom were Nepalese. The Nepalese workers were responsible for manual labour, including cooking and cleaning.
