Camera Mainichi
is a Japanese monthly magazine of photography that started in June 1954 and ceased publication in April 1985.Mari Shirayama, "Major Photography Magazines", pp. 378–385 of Anne Wilkes Tucker, ed., ''The History of Japanese Photography'' (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2003; ). The Mainichi Press was the founding company. Robert Capa was instrumental in the establishment of the magazine. As in most mass-market photography magazines, much of the editorial content of ''Camera Mainichi'' was devoted to news and reviews of cameras, lenses, and other equipment. But from the start it found space for first-rate and unconventional photography, and especially during the period 1963–78 when it was edited by Shōji Yamagishi it seemed more adventurous than its major rivals ''Asahi Camera'' and ''Nippon Camera'' (which both survived it). Robert Capa
Robert Capa (born Endre Ernő Friedmann; October 22, 1913 – May 25, 1954) was a Hungarian-American war photographer and photojournalist as well as the companion and professional partner of photographer Gerda Taro. He is considered by some to be the greatest combat and adventure photographer in history.Kershaw, Alex. Shōji Yamagishi
was a photography critic, curator, and magazine editor. Yamagishi entered Mainichi Shinbunsha (publisher of ''Mainichi Shinbun'') in 1950. He started as a photographer, but was less successful at taking than at selecting photographs. From 1963 until its July 1978 issue, Yamagishi edited ''Camera Mainichi,'' and was widely admired both for the quality of the photography he was able to present there and for the encouragement he gave to young photographers. During this period advertising was attracting some of the most talented photographers, and Yamagishi was particularly noted for the way in which he persuaded photographers working in advertising to pursue their own photographic interests during their spare time. Asahi Camera
was a Japanese monthly photographic magazine, published from April 1926 until July 2020, when it was discontinued due to declining circulation. History and profile The first issue was that for April 1926.During the twentieth century, Japanese monthly magazines routinely came out in the month before the cover date, or even the month before that. It was from the outset published by Asahi Shinbun-sha, publisher of the newspaper ''Asahi Shinbun.'' The headquarters was in Tokyo. is a Japanese photography magazine, published between 1950 and 2021. ''Nippon Camera'' started in March 1950 as a bimonthly magazine, published by Kōgeisha (Tokyo) as the successor to the book series ''Amachua Shashin Sōsho'' (1948–49). was a Japanese magazine editor and photography critic. Nishii was born in Tokyo in 1946. He graduated in economics from Keio University in 1968, and shortly after this moved to the company publishing ''Mainichi Shimbun,'' rising via stints at '' Sunday Mainichi'' and '' Mainich Graph'' to become editor in chief of ''Camera Mainichi'' from 1983 until the magazine folded in 1985. Domon Ken Award
The Domon Ken Award (土門拳賞, ''Domon-Ken-shō'') is one of Japan's photographic awards. The award was started in 1981 by the Mainichi Newspapers to mark the 110th birthday of the ''Mainichi Shimbun'', its daily newspaper and main publication, in honor of the photographer Ken Domon. It has been awarded every year since 1982. The Domon Ken Award is given to a single established photographer for a published book of documentary photographs. Together with sample photographs, an announcement is made in ''Sunday Mainichi'' (and previously in ''Camera Mainichi'' as well). Award-winning works are shown in the Ginza Nikon Salon and the Domon Ken Photography Museum.
