Cambridge University Polo Club
The Cambridge University Polo Club (often referred to as CUPC) is the Discretionary Full Blue sports club for competitive polo at the University of Cambridge. Founded in 1873, it is the oldest surviving polo club in Europe and the second oldest in the world. Its annual Varsity Match against Oxford, established in 1878, is the oldest continuing polo fixture in the world. History The club was founded in 1873 by the Hon John Fitzwilliam. Originally, the colours of the club were maroon and yellow and, after some discussions and the sanction of the Cambridge University Boat Club, the following rule was passed : "That the Polo Five be allowed to wear a light blue polo shirt, white forage cap, and belt". The first Inter-university match was held on the Bullingdon Cricket Ground in Cowley, on 27 November 1878. Guards Polo Club
The Guards Polo Club is an English polo club in Windsor, Berkshire. It was most closely associated with the British Royal Family. Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh was President of the club from its formation on 25 January 1955 until his death in April 2021. Queen Elizabeth II was its patron. Louis Francis Albert Victor Nicholas Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma (25 June 1900 – 27 August 1979) was a British naval officer, colonial administrator and close relative of the British royal family. Vivian Lockett
Vivian Noverre Lockett (18 July 1880 – 30 May 1962) was a colonel in the British army, and a 10 goal handicap player. He won a gold medal for the United Kingdom at the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp. Biography He was born on 18 July 1880 in New Brighton, Cheshire (now Merseyside). He attended Wellington, Trinity College, Cambridge, and Sandhurst. Upon graduating from Sandhurst he joined the Royal Field Artillery before moving to the 17th Lancers, and in 1927 succeeded his fellow Olympian Tim Melville as Commanding Officer. He retired from the army in 1933 but was recalled in 1940 as commander of the Cavalry Training Centre in Edinburgh. He married Violet Coleman in 1915 and had three children. Frederick Freake
Sir Frederick Charles Maitland Freake, 3rd Baronet (7 March 1876 – 22 December 1950) was a British polo player in the 1900 Summer Olympics and in the 1908 Summer Olympics. Biography He was born on 7 March 1876 and was educated at Magdalene College, Cambridge. In 1900 he was part of the BLO Polo Club Rugby polo team which won the silver medal.
