Camargo, Oklahoma
Camargo is a town in Dewey County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 178 at the 2010 census, an increase of 54.8 percent from the figure of 115 in 2000. History The area that became the present town of Camargo was part of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Reservation until it was opened for non-Indian settlement on April 19, 1892. A Camargo post office was established on September 16, 1892. Two stories exist about the meaning of the town name. One claims that it was named for a town in Illinois, while the other claims Camargo meant "little dog" in the Cheyenne language. Farming and ranching sustained Camargo's early economy. The Wichita Falls and Northwestern Railway (later the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway, or Katy) built a line in 1912 between Leedey and Forgan (in Beaver County that passed through Camargo. Oklahoma State Highway 34
State Highway 34 (abbreviated SH-34) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. It runs for south-to-north in the western part of the state. The highway begins northeast of Eldorado, in the southwest corner of the state, and extends north to the Kansas state line between Woodward and Coldwater, Kansas. SH-34 has always been a lengthy highway, starting with its commissioning in June 1931, when it was a border-to-border highway stretching from Texas to Kansas. Vici is a town in Dewey County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 611 at the time of the 2020 census. No information appears on the origins of the town name, but Vici is Latin for “I conquered.” History Although it had a couple of nearby predecessor settlements, the current town of Vici was platted on September 11, 1911, at a time when buildings were being moved to the site to be close to the tracks of the newly built Wichita Falls and Northwestern Railway, later part of the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad.
