Camano Island, WA
Camano Island is a large island in Possession Sound, a section of Puget Sound. It is part of Island County, Washington, and is located between Whidbey Island and the mainland (Snohomish County) by the Saratoga Passage to the west and Port Susan and Davis Slough to the east. The island has one road connection to the mainland, via State Route 532 over the Camano Gateway Bridge at the northeast end of the island, connecting to the city of Stanwood. The island has a total area of , making it one of the largest in the state of Washington. It has a year-round population of 15,661 as of the 2010 census. The population peaks at over 17,000 during the summer months due to part-time residents with vacation homes on the island. Camano Island State Park
Camano Island State Park is publicly owned recreation area on Camano Island in Puget Sound located southwest of Stanwood in Island County, Washington, United States. The park occupies and has of shoreline. It is managed by the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission. History The park was established in 1949. It took just one day for 900 volunteers from Camano Island to complete the initial work on the park. Stanwood, Washington
Stanwood is a city in Snohomish County, Washington, United States. The city is located north of Seattle, at the mouth of the Stillaguamish River near Camano Island. As of the 2010 census, its population is 6,231. Stanwood was founded in 1866 as Centerville, adopting its current name in 1877 after the arrival of postmaster Daniel O. Pearson. It was platted in 1889 and incorporated as a city in 1903. The city was bypassed by the Great Northern Railway, which built a depot east that grew into its own separate town, incorporated in 1922 as East Stanwood. The two Stanwoods were civic rivals for several decades, until their governments were consolidated after a 1960 referendum was approved by voters. Camano Gateway Bridge
The Mark Clark Bridge was a girder bridge that carried a State Route 532 across the Stillaguamish River between Stanwood, Washington, and Camano Island. It was the only form of road access to Camano Island from 1950 until 2010, when it was demolished. The bridge was named for Mark W. Clark, a decorated Army officer who spent time on Camano Island. The water surrounding Camano Island is too shallow for ferry service, which made this bridge a critical link for island residents and visitors. The bridge replaced an earlier swing bridge that opened in 1909 and was part of the first highway between Stanwood and Camano Island. Washington State Route 532
State Route 532 (SR 532) is a short Washington state highway in Island and Snohomish counties, located in the United States. It connects Camano Island and Stanwood to a junction with Interstate 5 (I-5) northwest of Arlington. The eastern section of the road was constructed in 1887 and was connected to Camano Island by a cable ferry, which was replaced by a bridge opened in 1909. The highway was paved in 1916 and acquired by the state government in 1945, becoming Secondary State Highway 1Y (SSH 1Y). The state funded new bridges across the Stillaguamish River and Davis Slough and later renumbered the highway as SR 532 in 1964, a few years before the highway was moved to a new roadway.
