Calvary Catholic Cemetery (Pittsburgh)
Calvary Catholic Cemetery is located at 718 Hazelwood Avenue in the Greenfield and Hazelwood neighborhoods of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. It was founded in 1886 with the purchase of a 200-acre (80-hectare) tract. The first official interment occurred in 1888, though there are graves with earlier dates. As of 2008, 152,238 entombments have been recorded at Calvary Cemetery. It remains the largest of the cemeteries in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh. David Leo Lawrence
David Leo Lawrence (June 18, 1889 – November 21, 1966) was an American politician who served as the 37th governor of Pennsylvania from 1959 to 1963. The first Catholic elected as governor, Lawrence is the only mayor of Pittsburgh to have also been elected as Governor of Pennsylvania. He served four terms as mayor, from 1946 through 1959. Early life Lawrence was born into a working-class Irish Catholic family in the downtown Golden Triangle neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Too poor to attend college, Lawrence instead took a job as a clerk for Pittsburgh attorney William Brennan, the chairman of the local Democratic party and a labor movement pioneer. Vincent Martin Leonard (December 11, 1908 РAugust 28, 1994) was an American prelate of the Catholic Church. He served as bishop of the Diocese of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania from 1969 to 1983. Biography Early life Vincent Leonard was born on December 11, 1908, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, one of nine children of Francis and Catherine (n̩e Dolan) Leonard. His father worked in the steel mills. He was raised in the Hill District neighborhood of Pittsburgh, and received his early education at the parochial school of St. Brigid Parish. James Renshaw Cox (1886–1951) was an American Roman Catholic priest of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, known for his pro-labor activism. He was a candidate for President of the United States in 1932, and also an organizer of an unprecedented protest march on Washington, DC. Biography Cox was born in 1886 in the Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh, growing up in an unparalleled period of industrial expansion. He began as a cab driver and steelworker, working his way through Duquesne University. He next entered Saint Vincent Seminary in Latrobe, Pennsylvania and was ordained in 1911. Robert E. O'Connor Jr. (December 9, 1944 – September 1, 2006) was an American politician who was the Mayor of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from January 3, 2006, until his death. Michael Joseph Muldowney
Michael Joseph Muldowney (August 10, 1889 – March 30, 1947) was a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1894, he moved with his parents to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was graduated from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh in 1908. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives from 1925 to 1929. He served in the city council of Pittsburgh from 1930 to 1933. Muldowney was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-third Congress, but was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1934. He was a member of the State board of mercantile appraisers from 1935 to 1937. He was appointed as the State Unemployment Compensation Referee in 1940 and served in that capacity until his death in Pittsburgh. John Mary Morin
John Mary Morin (April 18, 1868 – March 3, 1942) was a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives for Pennsylvania. Biography Morin was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but moved with his parents to Pittsburgh. He began working in a glass factory in 1882, and was employed in steel mills until 1885. In 1889, he moved to Missoula, Montana and engaged in mercantile pursuits, during which time he took a night course at the Haskins' Business College in Missoula. After graduating from college in 1892, he returned to Pittsburgh and became engaged in the hotel business. He became a director of the Washington Trust Company in 1910. He served as a member of the Pittsburgh Common Council from 1904 to 1906. He was a delegate to the Republican State conventions from 1905 to 1912, and director of Public Safety in Pittsburgh from 1909 to 1913.
